Hispanic/Latino representation in medical research remains poor. We describe factors affecting rates of recruitment, participation, adherence, and retention of Hispanics/Latinos in clinical studies in the United States and characterize proposed strategies to improve these rates. A targeted literature review was conducted. Relevant studies were identified from Embase, MEDLINE®, and CENTRAL from January 1, 2010 to September 4, 2020. Sixty-eight studies were included. Key facilitators to research involvement were establishing trust between research staff and participants, incorporating familism, and using culturally appropriate language. Common elements of successful strategies for improving research involvement included incorporating community partners, bilingual and culturally competent research staff, continuous engagement and building relationships between participants and staff, and incorporating Hispanic/Latino cultural values. There is no universal strategy to improve research involvement of Hispanics/Latinos. The best strategy is likely a combination of key elements from several strategies, tailored to each unique study population. Further research is needed.

This study reviews the prevalence of copper (Cu) deficiency in patients for metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS), as well as the long-term outcomes related to the prevalence of Cu deficiency after undergoing MBS. A systematic literature search and meta-analysis were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus for articles published by August 31, 2024. The search terms included metabolic and bariatric surgery, weight loss surgery, metabolic surgery, obesity surgery, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric banding, gastric bypass, duodenal switch, duodenojejunal bypass, copper, copper deficiency, and hypocuposemia.

Purpose: To summarize and categorize postulated mechanisms of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-mediated retinal and choroidal inflammation and discuss resulting implications for evaluation and management of these adverse reactions.
Design: Targeted literature review with interpretation and perspective Methods: We performed a review of selected literature describing immune-mediated retinal and choroidal adverse reactions associated with ICI therapy, synthesizing and categorizing the likely underlying pathogenic mechanisms. Based on these mechanistic categories, we provide perspective on a rational approach to the evaluation of patients with ICI-associated inflammatory disorders of the retina and choroid.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is widely used in China for disease treatment and has become a valuable resource for drug development due to its high efficacy and low risk of side-effects. However, growing toxicity reports has garnered significant global attention. A major challenge in addressing TCM-induced toxicity is lack of specific and sensitive biomarkers for diagnosing and predicting its toxicity.

Tripartite motif-containing proteins (TRIMs), comprising the greatest subfamily of E3 ubiquitin ligases with approximately 80 members of this family, are widely distributed in mammalian cells. TRIMs actively participate in ubiquitination of target proteins, a type of post-translational modification associated with protein degradation and other functions. Tripartite motif-containing protein 29 (TRIM29), a member of the TRIM family, differs from other members of this family in that it lacks the RING finger structural domain containing cysteine and histidine residues that mediates DNA binding, protein-protein interactions, and ubiquitin ligase, at its N-terminus.
