Exposure to household air pollution is a leading cause of ill-health globally. The Household Air Pollution Intervention Network (HAPIN) randomized controlled trial evaluated the impact of a free liquefied petroleum gas stove and fuel intervention on birth outcomes and maternal and child health. As part of HAPIN, an extensive exposure assessment was conducted. Here, we report on PM and CO exposures of young children (≤ 15 months old) reconstructed using a Bluetooth-beacon based time-activity monitoring system coupled with microenvironmental pollutant monitors. Median (IQR) exposures to PM were 65.1 (33 - 128.2) µg/m in the control group and 22.9 (17.2 - 35.3) µg/m3 in the intervention group; for CO, median (IQR) exposures were 1.1 (0.3 - 2.9) ppm and 0.2 (0 - 0.7) ppm for control and intervention group, respectively. Exposure reductions were stable over time and consistent with previous findings for the children's mothers. In the intervention group, 75% of children's reconstructed exposures were below the WHO interim target guideline value of 35 µg/m , while 26% were below the standard in the control group. Our findings suggest that an LPG fuel and stove intervention can substantially reduce children's exposure to household air pollution.

Background: The trematode parasite (liver fluke) can infect livestock, wild mammals, and humans, generating serious economic losses worldwide. Aquatic or amphibious snails of the Lymnaeidae family are the intermediate host of this parasite. Both snail population dynamics and parasite development are closely associated with temperature, although most field studies have recorded air temperature rather than water temperature.

The impact of cooking with solid fuels on neighborhood-scale PM concentrations in rural towns and communities is poorly quantified due to the lack of credible ground-level monitoring sites and spatial heterogeneity at a scale that is below the resolution of remote sensing GEOS-Chem hybrid models. Emissions of PM from use of open fires for cooking in rural Mexico are known to cause poor indoor air quality. The effectiveness of different intervention strategies to reduce such pollution exposures also varies because of different local building densities and source intensities.

The global incidence of allergic diseases is rising and poses a substantial threat to human health. Allergenic proteins released by various allergenic species play a critical role in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases and have been widely detected in the environmental matrix. However, the release, presence and interaction of environmental allergens with human body remain to be elucidated.

Background: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a common birth defect. Our previous studies suggest that indoor air pollution, especially total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), may increase fetal CHD risk, whereas vitamin and folic acid (FA) supplements in early pregnancy might offer protection against CHD. However, limited research has explored whether FA or multivitamin supplementation can mitigate the effects of TVOCs exposure on CHD.

This study investigated the associations between residential environmental characteristics and the prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases in the five largest Bulgarian cities. Representative cross-sectional survey data (N = 4640 adults) was collected in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, and Ruse. Participants self-reported diagnosis or medication intake for hypertension, ischemic heart disease (IHD), stroke, and diabetes mellitus, as well as domestic burning of solid fuel and having a domestic garden.
