[Venous access routes for cardiac implantable electronic devices].

Herzschrittmacherther Elektrophysiol

Hannover Herzrhythmus Centrum, Klinik für Kardiologie und Angiologie, Medizinische Hochschule Hannover, Hannover, Deutschland.

Published: September 2023

Various venous access routes in the region of the clavicle are available for cardiac device treatment. After many years of choosing access via the subclavian vein, current data explicitly show that lateral approaches such as preparation of the cephalic vein or puncture of the axillary vein are clearly superior in terms of probe durability and risk of complications. This article describes the preparation and performance of the various access techniques and is intended to provide a practical guide for the work in cardiac pacemaker operations. This work continues a series of articles designed for advanced training in specialized rhythmology.

Accelerating biosimilar market access: the case for allowing earlier standing.

J Law Biosci

January 2025

Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics, Brigham and Women's Hospital, 1620 Tremont St. Suite 3030, Boston, MA 02120, USA.

Biosimilars, which are affordable alternatives to biologic medicines, face delays in market entry due to the current patent litigation framework under the Biologic Price Competition and Innovation Act. Currently, biosimilar manufacturers can only initiate patent litigation to attempt to clear weak and invalid patents after submitting their Biologic License Application to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which happens after completing extensive, and costly clinical trials. By contrast, generic drug manufacturers can start litigation earlier due to shorter development times and less stringent clinical requirements, allowing them to launch immediately after the primary patent expires.

Background: Despite the increasing substance use in Canada, our understanding of how substance use varies based on the intersections of gender, ethnicity/race, and income sources among preclinical populations remains limited. Thus, this study aimed to investigate, among clients of mental health and addiction (MHA) intake in Nova Scotia: 1) the prevalence of substance use by gender, ethnicity, and income source; 2) the routes of substance administration; 3) factors associated with substance use. Understanding how gender, ethnicity, and income sources intersect to influence substance use patterns is essential for designing prevention and treatment strategies tailored to an individual's unique needs.

Herein, an efficient electrochemical three-component C-H functionalization of indoles with sodium bisulfite and alcohols is described, providing a sustainable and convenient synthetic route for the construction of structurally valuable indole-containing sulfonate esters in moderate to good yields. This protocol proceeds in an undivided cell without any metal catalysts or oxidants, features a broad substrate scope, and has an excellent functional group tolerance. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that a radical-radical pathway may be involved in this three-component reaction system.

Racial Disparities in Minimally Invasive Benign Hysterectomy.

JSLS

January 2025

Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. (Drs. Leaf, Liang, and Borahay).

Background And Objectives: Racial and ethnic disparities in access to minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and the rate of surgical complications in minority groups remain profoundly underinvestigated. This meta-analysis aims to compare the rate of MIS utilization for benign hysterectomy as well as the surgical morbidity among racial and ethnic minority patients in the United States.

Methods: Studies comparing utilization rate of MIS for benign hysterectomy among non-Hispanic white, Black, and Hispanic populations were considered eligible.
