Michler's ketone (MK) is a dimethylamino ketone that undergoes facile protonation under electrospray-ionization conditions to produce an ion of / 269. Initial LC-MS results showed that the collision-induced dissociation (CID) spectra of the / 269 ion depend heavily on the composition of the chromatographic mobile phase. Subsequent ion-mobility separation of the mass-selected / 269 ion revealed that protonated MK exists as two tautomeric forms. Moreover, the relative population of the two protomeric forms in the ion ensemble depends on the nature of the ambient molecules present in the atmospheric pressure ion source. For example, the ion-mobility arrival-time profile acquired from the mass-selected / 269 ion generated from an acetonitrile solution showed two peaks of near equal intensity. The peak with the shorter arrival time represented the -protomer and that with the longer arrival time represented the -protomer. However, when methanol or ammonia vapors were introduced to the ambient-pressure ion source, the intensity of the -protomer peak decreased rapidly and that of the -protomer signal soared until it became the dominant peak. When the introduction of methanol (or ammonia) vapors was stopped, the mobilogram signals gradually reverted back to their initial intensities. To rationalize this observation, we propose that the -protomer of MK in the presence of methanol vapor undergoes transformation to the -protomer by a Grotthuss-type mechanism via a methanol-based solvent bridge.

Enhanced Performance and Durability of Pore-Filling Membranes for Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis.

Membranes (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Green Chemical Engineering, College of Engineering, Sangmyung University, Cheonan 31066, Republic of Korea.

Four distinct pore-filling anion exchange membranes (PFAEMs) were prepared, and their mechanical properties, ion conductivity, and performance in anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) were evaluated. The fabricated PFAEMs demonstrated exceptional tensile strength, which was approximately 14 times higher than that of the commercial membrane, despite being nearly half as thin. Ion conductivity measurements revealed that acrylamide-based membranes outperformed benzyl-based ones, exhibiting 25% and 41% higher conductivity when using crosslinkers with two and three crosslinking sites, respectively.

Electronic address:

Microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics can enter groundwater through the interaction of soil and surface water, and MPs as carriers of antibiotics can promote the migration of antibiotics and thus generate more serious ecological risks. Therefore, this paper used experimental and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation methods to investigate the sorption between four common types of MPs in groundwater, namely polyamide (PA), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyethylene (PE), and oxytetracycline (OTC) with high detection rate in groundwater. Additionally, the impact of environmental factors on sorption was examined.

Manganese oxide (MnO) cathodes with a Zn/H co-intercalation mixing mechanism have exhibited great potential for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) owing to their high energy density and optimal electrolyte suitability. However, the strong electrostatic interactions and slow kinetics between the high charge density zinc ions and the fixed lattice in conventional cathodes have hindered the development of AZIBs. Hence, selecting H with a smaller ionic radius and reduced electrostatic repulsion as carriers was a feasible strategy.

Comparison of adsorption capacity of 4-Nonylphenol on conventional and biodegradable microplastics aged under natural water.

J Contam Hydrol

December 2024

Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Universidad de Chile, Santiago, RM, Chile.

This study investigated the adsorption of 4-Nonylphenol (4-NP) on aged microplastics (MPs) composed of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and poly(butylene-adipate-co-terephthalate)/polylactic acid (PBAT/PLA). Morphological analysis revealed wear, wrinkles, and increased surface roughness in both aged MPs, with X-ray diffraction showing slight increases in crystallinity. Infrared spectroscopy showed an increase in the carbonyl index from 2.
