Background: Growing evidence indicates that disruptions in mitochondrial quality management contribute to the development of acute kidney injury (AKI), incomplete or maladaptive kidney repair, and chronic kidney disease. However, the temporal dynamics of mitochondrial quality control alterations in relation to renal injury and its recovery remain poorly understood and are addressed in this manuscript.
Method: ology: Male Wistar rats (n = 60) were subjected to varying durations of ischemia and reperfusion.

Cellular senescence is a condition characterized by stable, irreversible cell cycle arrest linked to the aging process. The accumulation of senescent cells in the cardiac muscle can contribute to various cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Telomere shortening, epigenetic modifications, DNA damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, and oxidative stress are known contributors to the onset of cellular senescence in the heart.

Magnesium (Mg) alloys are popular biodegradable metals studied for orthopedic and cardiovascular applications, mainly because Mg ions are essential trace elements known to promote angiogenesis and osteogenesis. However, Mg corrosion consists of oxidation and reduction reactions that produce by-products, such as hydrogen gas, reactive oxygen species, and hydroxides. It is still unclear how all these by-products and Mg ions concomitantly alter the microenvironment and cell behaviors spatially and temporally.

Efficient signal transduction that mediates mitochondrial turnover is a strong determinant of metabolic health in skeletal muscle. Of these pathways, our focus was aimed towards the enhancement of antioxidant capacity, mitophagy, and mitochondrial biogenesis. While physical activity is an excellent inducer of mitochondrial turnover, its ability to ubiquitously activate and enhance mitochondrial turnover prevents definitive differentiation of the contribution made by each pathway.
