Article Abstract

The present study aims to explore hospital admission data pertaining to Dutch adolescents admitted for acute alcohol intoxication between 2007 - 2019. Specific focus will be on the increase in the age limit for alcohol nationwide, from 16 to 18 years old for low alcoholic beverages, on the first of January 2014. The data of all admitted adolescents < 18 years old with acute alcohol intoxication was collected from 12 Dutch major district general hospitals (which accounts for 35% of the adolescents with acute alcohol intoxication in the Netherlands). In total, 2675 adolescents who were treated with symptoms of acute alcohol intoxication during this period were included in this study. The incidence of adolescents presenting with acute alcohol intoxication between 2007 and 2019 increased significantly ( = 78 (2007) vs. 279 (2019)). Moreover, the mean age of this population increased significantly over time. In 2007, 62,8% of the adolescents were < 16 years old, whereas by 2019 this had dropped to 40.2%. Furthermore, the proportion with positive drug screening results also increased significantly within patients with acute alcohol intoxication after the alcohol law change in 2014. The most common drug found in the drug screening was cannabis. These findings are relevant for both the central government's ongoing prevention initiatives and treatment strategies within hospitals.

Objective: The present study aimed to compare time to effective pain relief between diclofenac 75 mg intramuscular (IM) and tramadol 50 mg intravenous (IV) for ED patients with acute renal colic.

Methods: A randomised, double-blinded, sham-controlled, superiority trial was conducted. Patients diagnosed with acute renal colic (hydronephrosis and/or stone visualisation on point-of-care ultrasound) in the ED were randomly assigned to receive an IM injection of 75 mg of diclofenac or IV tramadol 50 mg.

Background: Overweight and obesity-chronic illnesses in which an increase in body fat promotes adipose tissue dysfunction and abnormal fat mass resulting in adverse metabolic, biomechanical, and psychosocial health consequences-negatively impact female fertility. Adverse conception outcomes are multifactorial, ranging from poor oocyte quality and implantation issues to miscarriages and fetal health issues. However, with the advent of novel pharmacologic agents, significant weight loss can be achieved, improving the chances of healthy pregnancies, and their use should be considered during periconceptual counseling.

In this work, we synthesize a quinoline-based heptamethine cyanine, QuCy7, with sulfonate groups to enhance water solubility. This dye demonstrates exceptional near-infrared absorption beyond 750 nm, accompanied by photothermal properties but low photostability. Encapsulating QyCy7 with polyethylene glycol to form nanopolymer, QuCy7@mPEG NPs, addresses the issue of its photoinstability.

Background: Therapeutic options for managing intestinal and hepatic inflammation associated with alcohol consumption, a prevalent health problem worldwide, remain unavailable. This study examines the potential efficacy of polyethylene glycol (PEG) in mitigating the intestinal and hepatic damage, employing a mouse model for assessment.

Methods: First, the mixture of ethanol (4 g/kg body weight) and PEG (2 g/kg body weight) or an equivalent volume of vehicle was administered orally alcohol consumption.
