We show that catalyst-free aqueous solutions of hyperpolarized [1-C]succinate can be produced using parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP) and a combination of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation reactions. We generate hyperpolarized [1-C]fumarate PHIP using para-enriched hydrogen gas with a homogeneous ruthenium catalyst, and subsequently remove the toxic catalyst and reaction side products a purification procedure. Following this, we perform a second hydrogenation reaction using normal hydrogen gas to convert the fumarate into succinate using a solid Pd/AlO catalyst. This inexpensive polarization protocol has a turnover time of a few minutes, and represents a major advance for applications of [1-C]succinate as a hyperpolarized contrast agent.

Although silicon is a widespread constituent in dental materials, its possible influence on the formation and repair of teeth remains largely unexplored. Here, we studied the effect of two silicic acid-releasing nanomaterials, silica and bioglass, on a living model of pulp consisting of dental pulp stem cells seeded in dense type I collagen hydrogels. Silica nanoparticles and released silicic acid had little effect on cell viability and mineralization efficiency but impacted metabolic activity, delayed matrix remodeling, and led to heterogeneous cell distribution.

Phosphorescent gold(iii) complexes possess long-lived emissive excited states, making them ideal for use as molecular sensors and photosensitizers for organic transformations. Literature reports indicate that gold(iii) emitters exhibit good catalytic activity in homogeneous photochemical reactions. Heterogeneous metal-organic framework (MOF)-supported gold(iii) photocatalysts are considered to show high recyclability in photochemical reactions and potentially provide new selectivities.

Significance: Personalized photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment planning requires knowledge of the spatial and temporal co-localization of photons, photosensitizers (PSs), and oxygen. The inter- and intra-subject variability in the photosensitizer concentration can lead to suboptimal outcomes using standard treatment plans.

Aim: We aim to quantify the PS spatial variation in tumors and its effect on PDT treatment planning solutions.

Background: Carbohydrates exhibit diverse functions and extensive biological activities and are notable in the field of life sciences. However, their inherent diversity and complexity-steaming from variations in isomeric monomers, glycosidic bonds, configurations, etc.-present considerable challenges in structural analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers propose a new method for creating multiple shape memory polymers (SMPs) by mixing immiscible polymers under high pressure and shear, rather than traditional blending techniques.
  • This approach allows for nanoscale homogeneity (40-95 nm) in the blends, improving both shape memory and mechanical performance.
  • The study focused on a blend of polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS), demonstrating that the processed blend achieves a strong triple shape memory effect with high shape fixation and recoverability, along with adjustable transition temperatures.
