Unlabelled: is to assess protective capabilities of the polymer coating made of polyvinyl alcohol to prevent leukocyte adhesion to epoxy-treated bovine pericardium, which is used in production of bioprosthetic heart valves.

Materials And Methods: Fragments of unmodified (control) and modified with polyvinyl alcohol epoxy-treated bovine pericardium were incubated in the dedicated chambers connected to a pulsatile flow system (Ibidi GmbH, Germany). During 48 h incubation was conducted in whole donor plasma containing 310 of mononuclear fraction cells.

Valve replacement is the most effective means of treating heart valve diseases, and transcatheter heart valve replacement (THVR) is the hottest field at present. However, the durability of the commercial bioprosthetic valves has always been the limiting factor restricting the development of interventional valve technology. The chronic inflammatory reaction, calcification, and difficulty in endothelialization after the implantation of a glutaraldehyde cross-linked porcine aortic valve or bovine pericardium often led to valve degeneration.

Surgery for Bentall's endocarditis poses challenges because the infection spreads to the aortic valve annulus, leading to an annular abscess that necessitates reconstruction. We present a straightforward miniskirt Bentall procedure using an annular pericardial patch to treat Bentall's endocarditis with an annular abscess. After removing the former composite graft and debriding the aortic root and annulus, we created a miniskirt-composite graft using a mechanical or bioprosthetic valve, a straight or Valsalva graft, and an annular bovine pericardial patch with a valve prosthetic sizer.

Article Synopsis
  • Bioprosthetic heart valves (BHVs) are commonly used in medicine but can suffer from fatigue damage due to their sensitivity to body positions.
  • The study analyzed the effects of different postures—upright, sitting, prone, supine, and orthostatic hypotension (OH)—on the performance of these valves using a simulation model.
  • Results indicated that the OH position negatively impacted valve function the most, causing increased regurgitation and flutter, which heightens the risk of thrombosis and damage; thus, patients should avoid this posture for better valve longevity.
