The light-detecting organelle of the photoreceptor cell is a modified primary cilium, called the outer segment. The outer segment houses hundreds of light-sensitive membrane, "discs," that are continuously renewed by the constant formation of new discs at the outer segment base and the phagocytosis of old ones from outer segment tips by the retinal pigment epithelium. In this chapter, we describe how an actin cytoskeleton network, residing precisely at the site of disc formation, provides the driving force that pushes out the ciliary plasma membrane to form each disc evagination that subsequently can mature into a bona fide disc. We highlight the functions of actin-binding proteins, particularly PCARE and Arp2/3, that are known to participate in disc formation. Finally, we describe a working model of disc formation built upon the many studies focusing on the role of actin during disc morphogenesis.

Purpose: Using a fully automated multitask deep learning method, which enabled simultaneous segmentation and quantification of all major anterior segment structures with swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), we aimed to investigate the three-dimensional (3D) alterations in iris morphology before and after implantable collamer lens (ICL) surgery.
Methods: All enrolled patients underwent anterior segment SS-OCT (ANTERION) within one week before and after ICL surgery. A multitask network automatically performed iris SS-OCT image segmentation and quantitative measurements of 3D iris morphology (iris thickness and volume of the inner 1-mm annular area and the outer 1-2-mm annular area, iris curvature [I-Curve], and iris smooth index [SI]).

Percutaneous pancreatic core biopsy is conclusive but challenging due to large-diameter needles, while smaller-diameter needles used in aspiration methods suffer from buckling and clogging. Inspired by the ovipositor of parasitic wasps, which resists buckling through self-propulsion and prevents clogging via friction-based transport, research has led to the integration of these functionalities into multi-segment needle designs or tissue transport system designs. This study aimed to combine these wasp-inspired functionalities into a single biopsy needle by changing the interconnection of the needle segments.

There are few taxonomic studies of the harpacticoid family Idyanthidae Lang, 1944 in the Pacific Ocean. As a first report of the family in this region, one species of the monotypic genus Lang, 1948 and two species of the genus Sars, 1905 are described from sublittoral habitats around the Korean Peninsula. sp.

Background: While vaccination remains crucial in mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, several ocular adverse events has been reported, including Acute Zonal Occult Outer Retinopathy (AZOOR) complex.
Case Presentation: A 31-year-old female presented declined best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and flashes in both eyes three days following second recombinant mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (Moderna). Fundus autofluorescence (FAF) illustrated speckled hyper-AF lesions surrounding right eye torpedo maculopathy site and hyper-AF lesions in the left macula.

Ticks are of veterinary importance as they transmit various pathogens to animals. In Yaeyama, Okinawa, Japan, Haemaphysalis longicornis became the dominant tick species after the eradication of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus in the 1990s. However, any recent changes remained unclear due to lack of surveys.
