Interfaces between a water droplet and a network of pillars produce eventually superhydrophobic, self-cleaning properties. Considering the surface fraction of the surface in interaction with water, it is possible to tune precisely the contact angle hysteresis (CAH) to low values, which is at the origin of the poor adhesion of water droplets, inducing their high mobility on such a surface. However, if one wants to move and position a droplet, the lower the CAH, the less precise will be the positioning on the surface. While rigid surfaces limit the possibilities of actuation, smart surfaces have been devised with which a stimulus can be used to trigger the displacement of a droplet. Light, electron beam, mechanical stimulation like vibration, or magnetism can be used to induce a displacement of droplets on surfaces and transfer them from one position to the targeted one. Among these methods, only few are reversible, leading to anisotropy-controlled orientation of the structured interface with water. Magnetically driven superhydrophobic surfaces are the most promising reprogramming surfaces that can lead to the control of wettability and droplet guidance.

Automated liquid handlers are fundamental in modern life science laboratories, yet their high costs and large footprints often limit accessibility for smaller labs. This study presents an innovative approach to decentralizing a liquid handling system by converting a low-cost 3D printer into a customizable and accurate liquid handler. The Personal Automated Liquid Handler (PALH) system, costing ∼$400, incorporates a single-channel pipet, custom 3D-printed components, and open-source software for personalized workflows, allowing researchers to build and modify the system for specific experimental needs.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a sophisticated diagnostic tool that utilizes the magnetic properties of biological tissue to generate detailed images of internal structures without the use of ionizing radiation. Despite its benefits in providing high-contrast images of soft tissues, the strong magnetic fields used in MRI present a unique safety challenge. Increasing MRI-related accidents and the prevalence of patients with metallic implants in recent years underscore the critical need for stringent MR safety protocols.

Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are reported to have disrupted autobiographical memory (AM). Using functional magnetic resonance imaging we investigated behavioral and neural processing of the recall of emotional (sad and happy) memories in 30 MDD, 18 BPD, and 34 healthy control (HC) unmedicated women. The behavioral results showed that the MDD group experienced more sadness than the HC after the sad recall, while BPD participants experienced less happiness than HC after the happy recall.

The diagnosis and analysis of major depressive disorder (MDD) faces some intractable challenges such as dataset limitations and clinical variability. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (Rs-fMRI) can reflect the fluctuation data of brain activity in a resting state, which can find the interrelationships, functional connections, and network characteristics among brain regions of the patients. In this paper, a brain functional connectivity matrix is constructed using Pearson correlation based on the characteristics of multi-site Rs-fMRI data and brain atlas, and an adaptive propagation operator graph convolutional network (APO-GCN) model is designed.

The interplay between quantum effects from magnetic frustration, low-dimensionality, spin-orbit coupling, and crystal electric field in rare-earth materials leads to nontrivial ground states with unusual magnetic excitations. Here, we investigate YbTaO, which hosts a buckled square net of Yb ions with = 1/2 moments. The observed Curie-Weiss temperature is about -1 K, implying an antiferromagnetic coupling between the Yb moments.
