Description These images feature the Lower Antelope Canyon which was originally called Hasdestwazi, a Navajo word that means "spiral rock arches." After hundreds of years, monsoons, winds, and flash floods eroded the slot canyon into the geological wonder that it is today. It enchants tourists and engulfs visitors as it flows around them in every direction. Just east of Page, Arizona, the massive sandstone formation is sacred to the Navajo Nation for its representation of Mother Nature's many gifts and the passage to time; it is also a reminder that things are larger and greater than ones' self. While these photos were taken in April 2018, I hope that the beauty of the canyon can also serve as a reminder for medical providers during the current pandemic that our mission is greater than ourselves and that life is another one of Mother Nature's gifts. Although our time to make a difference is limited, our impact is great and will live on for generations to come.

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a pregnancy-specific liver disease characterized by pruritus and elevated total bile acid (TBA) levels. The most serious impact of ICP is sudden unexplained intrauterine fetal death, especially when an associated TBA ≥ 100 µmol/L is confirmed. We report a case of a 27-year-old female patient with early-onset severe refractory ICP.

Nonacademic predictors of China medical licensing examination.

BMC Med Educ

January 2025

Department of Radiology and Tianjin Key Lab of Functional Imaging and Tianjin Institute of Radiology and State Key Laboratory of Experimental Hematology, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, Tianjin, 300052, China.

Background: National Medical Licensing Examination (NMLE) is the entrance exam for medical practice in China, and its general medical knowledge test (GMKT) evaluates abilities of medical students to comprehensively apply medical knowledge to clinical practice. This study aimed to identify nonacademic predictors of GMKT performance, which would benefit medical schools in designing appropriate strategies and techniques to facilitate the transition from medical students to qualified medical practitioners.

Methods: In 1202 medical students, we conducted the deletion-substitution-addition (DSA) and structural equation model (SEM) analyses to identify nonacademic predictors of GMKT performance from 98 candidate variables including early life events, physical conditions, psychological and personality assessments, cognitive abilities, and socioeconomic conditions.

Maternal Gut Inflammation Aggravates Acute Liver Failure Through Facilitating Ferroptosis via Altering Gut Microbial Metabolism in Offspring.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine, Jilin University, Changchun, 130062, China.

Microbial transmission from mother to infant is important for offspring microbiome formation and health. However, it is unclear whether maternal gut inflammation (MGI) during lactation influences mother-to-infant microbial transmission and offspring microbiota and disease susceptibility. In this study, it is found that MGI during lactation altered the gut microbiota of suckling pups by shaping the maternal microbiota in the gut and mammary glands.
