Related to the letters of an alphabet, entropy means the average number of binary digits required for the transmission of one character. Checking tables of statistical data, one finds that, in the first position of the numbers, the digits 1 to 9 occur with different frequencies. Correspondingly, from these probabilities, a value for the Shannon entropy H can be determined as well. Although in many cases, the Newcomb-Benford Law applies, distributions have been found where the 1 in the first position occurs up to more than 40 times as frequently as the 9. In this case, the probability of the occurrence of a particular first digit can be derived from a power function with a negative exponent > 1. While the entropy of the first digits following an NB distribution amounts to H = 2.88, for other data distributions (diameters of craters on Venus or the weight of fragments of crushed minerals), entropy values of 2.76 and 2.04 bits per digit have been found.

Goose astrovirus (GoAstV) has emerged as a significant pathogen affecting the goose industry in China, with GoAstV-2 becoming the dominant genotype since 2017. This study explores the genetic and structural factors underlying the prevalence of GoAstV-2, focusing on codon usage bias, spike protein variability, and structural stability. Phylogenetic and effective population size analyses revealed that GoAstV-2 experienced rapid expansion between 2017 and 2018, followed by population stabilization.

Groundwater toxicity and water level depletion are serious concerns today. Assessing groundwater quality (GWQ) is crucial for effective planning and management due to increasing demands for drinking and irrigation water. Therefore, this study aims to analyze groundwater hydrochemistry, variability, and factors influencing quality for drinking and irrigation purposes using indices and models.

The Waddington landscape was initially proposed to depict cell differentiation, and has been extended to explain phenomena such as reprogramming. The landscape serves as a concrete representation of cellular differentiation potential, yet the precise representation of this potential remains an unsolved problem, posing significant challenges to reconstructing the Waddington landscape. The characterization of cellular differentiation potential relies on transcriptomic signatures of known markers typically.

Since its origin in the thermodynamics of the 19th century, the concept of entropy has also permeated other fields of physics and mathematics, such as Classical and Quantum Statistical Mechanics, Information Theory, Probability Theory, Ergodic Theory and the Theory of Dynamical Systems. Specifically, we are referring to the classical entropies: the Boltzmann-Gibbs, von Neumann, Shannon, Kolmogorov-Sinai and topological entropies. In addition to their common name, which is historically justified (as we briefly describe in this review), another commonality of the classical entropies is the important role that they have played and are still playing in the theory and applications of their respective fields and beyond.

This paper analyzes the behavior of the entropy of a nuclear fuel rod under deep burnup conditions, beyond standard operational ranges, reaching up to 60 years. The evolution of the neutron source distribution in a pressurized water reactor (PWR) fuel pin was analyzed using the Monte Carlo method and Shannon information entropy. To maintain proper statistics, a novel scaling method was developed, adjusting the neutron population based on the fission rate.
