Published: April 2024

In the era that we seek personalization in material things, it is becoming increasingly clear that the individualized management of medicine and nutrition plays a key role in life expectancy and quality of life, allowing participation to some extent in our welfare and the use of societal resources in a rationale and equitable way. The implementation of precision medicine and nutrition are highly complex challenges which depend on the development of new technologies able to meet important requirements in terms of cost, simplicity, and versatility, and to determine both individually and simultaneously, almost in real time and with the required sensitivity and reliability, molecular markers of different omics levels in biofluids extracted, secreted (either naturally or stimulated), or circulating in the body. Relying on representative and pioneering examples, this review article critically discusses recent advances driving the position of electrochemical bioplatforms as one of the winning horses for the implementation of suitable tools for advanced diagnostics, therapy, and precision nutrition. In addition to a critical overview of the state of the art, including groundbreaking applications and challenges ahead, the article concludes with a personal vision of the imminent roadmap.

Gastrointestinal complications of hepatic glycogen storage disease: a national survey questionnaire study in China.

Orphanet J Rare Dis

January 2025

Department of Pediatrics, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, The Second School of Clinical Medicine, Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, 510080, China.

Background: Hepatic glycogen storage diseases (GSD) are inborn errors of metabolism with abnormal storage or utilization of glycogen, a complex disease with significant genetic heterogeneity and similar clinical manifestations. This study aimed to describe the gastrointestinal symptoms and endoscopic features of hepatic GSD, including types Ia, Ib, III, VI, and IX, to provide evidence for etiology and treatment.

Methods: A national cohort survey questionnaire was distributed to patients diagnosed with GSD type Ia, Ib, III, VI, and IX through genetic testing or their parents in mainland China in May 2022.

Early phosphate changes as potential indicator of unreadiness for artificial feeding: a secondary analysis of the EPaNIC RCT.

Crit Care

January 2025

Clinical Division and Laboratory of Intensive Care Medicine, Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, KU Leuven, 3000, Leuven, Belgium.

Background: As compared to withholding parenteral nutrition (PN) until one week after intensive care unit (ICU) admission, Early PN prolonged ICU dependency in the EPaNIC randomized controlled trial (RCT). The Refeeding RCT showed improved outcome by temporary macronutrient restriction in ICU patients developing refeeding hypophosphatemia, defined as a phosphate decrease of > 0.16 mmol/L to levels < 0.

Background: This study qualitatively investigates retirement-age adults' perspectives on engaging in health behaviors such as physical activity or a healthy diet, distinguishing facilitators, barriers, goals, and motivations (the two later in line with Self-Determination Theory).

Methods: Two clinical psychologists conducted four focus groups with Spanish adults around retirement age. We conducted inductive and deductive content analysis.

Saturated fat in an evolutionary context.

Lipids Health Dis

Institute of Health, Oslo New University College, Ullevålsveien 76, Oslo, 0454, Norway.

Evolutionary perspectives have yielded profound insights in health and medical sciences. A fundamental recognition is that modern diet and lifestyle practices are mismatched with the human physiological constitution, shaped over eons in response to environmental selective pressures. This Darwinian angle can help illuminate and resolve issues in nutrition, including the contentious issue of fat consumption.

An efficient in vitro propagation protocol has been established for a valuable medicinal plant, Salix tetrasperma using mature nodal explants. The investigation aimed to observe the influence of various combinations and concentrations of cytokinins (mT, BA, and Kn) and auxins (NAA, IAA, and IBA) on regeneration potential using the Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium. Among individual cytokinin treatments, 5.
