All around the world, there are species of birds that have developed the ability to acquire toxic chemicals in their bodies making them less palatable or even lethal when consumed or contacted. Exposure to poisonous bird species is rare among humans, yet their poisons can produce serious clinical outcomes. In this study, we conducted a literature search focusing on seven avian species: the pitohuis (Pitohui spp.

The purpose of this study was to identify genomic regions, quantitative trait loci (QTL), affecting carcass traits on chromosome 1 in an F2 population of Japanese quail. For this purpose, two white and wild strains of Japanese quail (16 birds) were crossed reciprocally and F1 generation (34 birds) was created. The F2 generation was produced by intercrossing of the F1 birds.

The aim of the current study was to establish the sensitive embryonic endpoints and a test system for detecting androgenic and anti-androgenic potential of chemicals using an in ovo treatment assay in Japanese quail. In ovo injection with 0 to 75 microg of cyproterone acetate (CA) was performed on d 12 of incubation, followed by 0 to 300 microg of testosterone propionate (TP) injection on d 13 and histological examination on d 16. Experimental groups were composed of control (twice injected corn oil injections; on d 12 and d 13, respectively), TP-L (corn oil and 30 microg of TP), TP-H (corn oil and 300 microg of TP), CA-L + TP-H (7.

This study focused on the morphological characteristics of the uropygial glands of the Japanese quail and silver polish, particularly the arterial nourishment. With this respect, coloured-latex injected animals were dissected and their glands and related arteries were observed. The gland in the Japanese quail was relatively longer than that in the silver polish.

Formation of the uropygial papilla and glandular lumena was inhibited when the uropygial rudiment of a day 8 1/3 quail embryo was cultured for 2 days in a chemically defined medium in the presence of 50 ng/mL of epidermal growth factor (EGF). The epithelium of EGF-treated explants remained at the placode stage, or underwent minor invagination into the mesenchyme and became stratified like that of a 12- or 13-day-old embryo. EGF promoted cellular proliferation in the uropygial epithelium and the epidermis adjacent to the gland and it shortened the lag phase of proliferation and markedly stimulated epithelial DNA synthesis, detected immunocytochemically by labeling explants with 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU).
