Betaine supplementation improves CrossFit performance and increases testosterone levels, but has no influence on Wingate power: randomized crossover trial. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Background: Because betaine (BET) supplementation may improve muscular strength and endurance, it seems plausible that BET will also influence CrossFit performance (CF).

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of three weeks of BET supplementation on body composition, CF performance, muscle power in the Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT), and the concentrations of selected hormones. The secondary aims were to analyze the effectiveness of two different BET doses (2.5 and 5.0 g/d) and their interaction with the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) genotype.

Methods: The study was designed in a double-blinded randomized cross-over fashion. Forty-three CF practitioners completed the entire study. CF performance was measured using the Fight Gone Bad (FGB) workout and muscle power was evaluated in a 30-second WAnT. Body composition was determined by air-displacement plethysmography. Blood was drawn to assess hormone concentrations. The C677T single nucleotide polymorphism (rs180113) in the gene was analyzed.

Results: FGB total improved with BET by 8.7 ± 13.6% ( < 0.001), but no significant changes were observed with placebo (- 0.4 ± 10.0%,  = 0.128). No changes were also observed in WAnT and body composition. After BET supplementation testosterone concentration increased by 7.0 ± 15.4% with BET ( = 0.046) (no change with placebo: 1.5 ± 19.6%,  = 0.884) but had no effect on concentrations of insulin-like growth factor or cortisol. Finally, there were no significant interactions between genotype and BET dose in any outcome.

Conclusions: BET supplementation may improve CF performance and increase testosterone concentration. However, there was no evidence of a difference between dosages (2.5 and 5.0 g/d) and genotypes. The trial was registered on clinicaltrials.gov (NCT03702205) on 10 October 2018.

Carbohydrate (CHO) intake during exercise could decrease the subjective perceived exertion and promote recovery; however, the effects of intra-training CHO ingestion remain uncertain in CrossFit® (CF) sessions. Therefore, the aim of this randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial was to investigate the effect of acute CHO intake during a CF session on the delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), the perceived exertion (RPE), performance, recovery, and metabolic markers (capillary lactate and glucose) in CF athletes. Twenty-three male athletes trained in CF ingested CHO (60 g of maltodextrin + fructose) or a placebo (PLA) during a CF session.

Supplementing with antioxidants may be one of the most efficient means of minimizing oxidative stress during workouts in obese individuals. The aim of this study is to identify the results after twelve weeks of CrossFit workouts combined with Spinach thylakoid extract on the levels of insulin resistance (insulin and Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance [HOMA-IR]), fasting blood sugar (FBS), malondialdehyde (MDA), creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in obese males. Sixty-eight males with an average age of 27 ± 8 yrs and a BMI of 32.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how different push-off distances affect the maximum height of jumps among CrossFit athletes during countermovement jumps.
  • Results indicated a quadratic relationship between push-off distance and jump height, revealing that each athlete has an optimal push-off distance for maximizing their jump.
  • Additionally, longer push-off distances increased push-off time and decreased mean vertical external force, affecting overall jump performance by altering joint angles and torque production in the process.

Background: The Hip Stability Isometric Test (HipSIT) is a practical clinical assessment of posterolateral hip muscle performance. There is no information regarding the validity of the HipSIT in participants exposed to high-intensity training, such as CrossFit®.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the Hip Stability Isometric Test (HipSIT) concurrent validity with the isokinetic assessment in CrossFit® participants.
