Aim: The World Health Organization reported that cancer was the cause of death for 9.7 million people in 2022, and the numbers continue to rise every day. The present study examines the potential radioprotective effects of ubiquinone against x-ray radiation-induced intestinal damage and offers insight into new near-future methods for the treatment of radiation-induced tissue toxicity.

Exploring the Link Between Mucin 2 and Weaning Stress-Related Diarrhoea in Piglets.

Int J Mol Sci

January 2025

College of Animal Science and Technology, Northeast Agricultural University, No. 600 Changjiang Road, Xiangfang District, Harbin 150030, China.

To explore the relationship between intestinal mucin 2 () and weaning-induced diarrhoea in piglets, we analysed and piglets. The piglets were divided into a healthy weaned group, a weaned diarrhoea group, and a healthy unweaned control group. Intestinal tissues were collected, and goblet cell numbers, sizes, and degrees of intestinal injury were observed and recorded.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is marked by chronic hyperglycemia, gradually worsening β-cell failure, and insulin resistance. Glucotoxicity and oxidative stress cause β-cell failure by increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, impairing insulin secretion, and disrupting transcription factors such as pancreatic and duodenal homeobox 1 (PDX-1) and musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma oncogene family A (MafA). Cluster determinant 36 (CD36), an essential glycoprotein responsible for fatty acid uptake, exacerbates oxidative stress and induces the apoptosis of β-cells under hyperglycemic conditions through pathways involving ceramide, thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP), and Rac1-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase (NOX)-mediated redoxosome formation.

High stocking density (HSD) and heat stress (HS) challenge broiler production. While antibiotics can mitigate the adverse effects of HS and HSD, their restricted use underscores the need to explore phytochemicals, particularly their combined effects under such conditions. This study investigated the influence of flavonoids, isoquinoline alkaloids, and their combinations as alternatives to bacitracin on growth performance, inflammatory status, gut morphology, and ceca microbiome in broilers raised under HSD and HS.

The challenge of preventing gastric cancer in patients under surveillance for familial adenomatous polyposis.

Fam Cancer

January 2025

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Amsterdam UMC, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Gastroenterology Endocrinology Metabolism, Cancer Center Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Several extra-colonic manifestations, including duodenal polyposis and desmoid tumors, are well-described manifestations in familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). More recently, an increase in gastric cancer diagnoses has been observed in FAP. This case series presents nine patients with FAP who were diagnosed with gastric cancer at our FAP expertise center, of whom eight were diagnosed between 2017 and 2023, while before 2017 the only diagnosis of gastric cancer was in 2001.
