Three 12, 8-guaianolide sesquiterpene lactones, including a new compound intybusin F (), and a new natural product cichoriolide I (), along with six known 12, 6-guaianolide compounds (-) were isolated from the roots of L. Their structures were determined by extensive spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configurations of new compounds were elucidated based on analysis of the experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism spectra. Compounds , , , , showed significant effects on facilitating the glucose uptake in oleic acid plus high glucose-stimulated HepG2 cells at 50 μM. In addition, compounds , , , , exhibited obvious inhibitory effects against NO production, of them, compounds , , can significantly decrease the secretion of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6 and COX-2) levels in this hyperglycemic HepG2 cell model.

Ziniolide, xantholide B (11α-dihydroziniolide), and 11β-dihydroziniolide, three sesquiterpene lactones with 12,8-guaianolide skeletons, were identified as volatile metabolites from the roots of L., an invasive plant harvested in Corsica. Essential oil, as well as hydrosol and hexane extracts, showed the presence of guaianolide analogues.

In continuing our investigation on the chemical diversity of Algerian plants, we examined , whose chemical composition has been poorly studied. The present work was aimed at characterizing the secondary metabolite pattern of the CHCl extract of the aerial parts of this plant that displayed antiproliferative properties in a preliminary screening on HeLa cell line. The chemical analysis led us to characterize the bioactive oxygenated terpenoid fraction which includes, within major known metabolites, two new minor sesquiterpene lactones, centaurolide-A () and centaurolide-B ().
