Background: Verbal autopsy (VA) has been a crucial tool in ascertaining population-level cause of death (COD) estimates, specifically in countries where medical certification of COD is relatively limited. The World Health Organization has released an updated instrument (Verbal Autopsy Instrument 2022) that supports electronic data collection methods along with analytical software for assigning COD. Introduction: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the use of antiretroviral drugs as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for preventing HIV acquisition for occupational and non-occupational exposures. To inform the development of global WHO recommendations on PEP, we reviewed national guidelines of PEP for their recommendations.

Methods: Policies addressing PEP from 38 WHO HIV priority countries were obtained by searching governmental and non-governmental websites and consulting country and regional experts; these countries were selected based on HIV burden, new HIV acquisitions and the number of HIV-associated deaths.

Mycophenolate mofetil: an update on its mechanism of action and effect on lymphoid tissue.

Front Immunol

January 2025

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Olsztyn, Poland.

Introduction: Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is an immunosuppressive drug administered in the management of both autoimmune diseases and organ transplantation. The main aims of the study were: (a) to obtain information regarding the safety of using MMF in respect of its effect on normal T and B cells in lymphoid tissues; (b) to investigate whether the generation of inducible Foxp3-expressing regulatory T cells (Treg) might constitute additional mechanisms underlying the immunosuppressive properties of MMF.

Methods: The effect of MMF ( studies) and its active metabolite, mycophenolic acid, ( studies) on murine CD4 and CD8 T cells as well as B cells was determined, regarding: (a) absolute count, proliferation and apoptosis of these cells ( studies); (b) absolute count of these cells in the head and neck lymph nodes, mesenteric lymph nodes and the spleen ( studies).

Diabetes insipidus (DI) is a rare endocrine disease involving antidiuretic hormone (ADH), encompassing both central and nephrogenic causes. Inability to respond to or produce ADH leads to inability of the kidneys to reabsorb water, resulting in hypotonic polyuria and, if lack of hydration, hypernatremia. DI cannot be cured and is an unfamiliar disease process to many clinicians.
