Application of 5-Fluorouracil in management of glandular odontogenic cyst.

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare, aggressive odontogenic lesion that presents in the jaws. It is a diagnostically challenging entity due to its ability to mimic intraosseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma, botryoid cyst, surgical ciliated cyst, and radicular cyst. Treatment ranges from conservative to aggressive surgical interventions due to its varied clinical and radiological appearance and also its potential for recurrence. Aggressive surgical interventions result in the need for surgical site reconstruction, thus increasing patient morbidity. We report a case of GOC in the anterior mandible that was conservatively treated by the application of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU). Topical application of 5-FU was selected in the management of this lesion as it has shown to be effective in reducing recurrence rates of other aggressive odontogenic lesions such as odontogenic keratocysts. To our knowledge, this is the first case reported in the literature that was successfully treated by the combination of cyst enucleation, curettage, peripheral ostectomy and application of 5-FU. This study investigates the synthesis of ZnSnO@SiO@5-FU nanoparticles as an additive for bone fillers in dental maxillofacial reconstruction. ZnSnO nanoparticles were synthesized and coated with a SiO shell, followed by the incorporation of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), aimed at enhancing the therapeutic properties of classical fillers. Structural analysis using X-ray diffraction confirmed that ZnSnO was the single crystalline phase present, with its crystallinity preserved after both SiO coating and 5-FU incorporation.

Intelligent hydrogels are promising in constructing scaffolds for the controlled delivery of drugs. Here, a dual thermo- and pH-responsive hydrogel called PCG [poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-itaconic acid)/chitosan/glycerophosphate (PNI/CS/GP)] was established as the carrier of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) treatment. The PCG hydrogel was fabricated by blending synthesized [poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-itaconic acid), pNIAAm-co-IA, PNI] with CS in the presence of GP as a crosslinking agent.
