Aedes-borne arboviral human infections in Europe from 2000-2023: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Travel Med Infect Dis

January 2025

Introduction: Aedes-borne arboviral infections, both imported and autochthonous, are reported in Europe. We evaluated the landscape of these infections in Europe over 23 years and attempted to pre-empt the trajectory of impact of these infections in the climatic context of Aedes mosquito expansion in Europe.

Methods: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and registered in Prospero (CRD42023360259).

January 2025

Laboratório de Virologia Básica E Aplicada, Departamento de Microbiologia, Instituto de Ciências Biológicas, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais-UFMG, Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil.

Introduction: The present study aimed at evaluating the systemic profile and network connectivity of immune mediators during acute chikungunya fever (CHIKF) according to days of symptoms onset and ageing.

Methods: A total of 161 volunteers (76 CHIKF patients and 85 non-infected healthy controls) were enrolled.

Results And Discussion: Data demonstrated that a massive and polyfunctional storm of serum immune mediators was observed in CHIKF.

Mosquito-borne viruses represent a large global health burden. With geographic expansion of competent vectors for chikungunya virus (CHIKV), dengue virus (DENV), and Zika virus (ZIKV) in Europe, it is anticipated that the number of autochthonous cases of these tropical viruses in Europe will increase. Therefore, regular assessment of diagnostic capabilities in Europe is important.

Entomological surveillance during a major CHIKV outbreak in northwestern São Paulo: insights from São José do Rio Preto.

medRxiv

December 2024

Laboratório de Pesquisas em Virologia, Faculdade de Medicina de São José do Rio Preto, São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, Brazil.

Background: Brazil is considered an epicenter for emerging and re-emerging arboviruses that significantly impact public health. The mid-sized city of São José do Rio Preto (SJdRP) in northwestern São Paulo state is considered hyperendemic for arboviral diseases, with case numbers climbing each year. Only 45 cases of chikungunya (CHIKV) were reported in the city from 2015 to 2022, indicating cryptic circulation of this virus, but cases in the state increased notably in 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • Arboviruses are viruses transmitted primarily by mosquitoes, causing major diseases like dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever, with public health strategies focusing on community behavior changes to reduce mosquito breeding.
  • The study aims to evaluate KAP (Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices) questionnaires related to these arboviral infections to better understand community awareness and prevention strategies.
  • A scoping review will be conducted by analyzing various scientific databases, assessing the KAP questionnaires' content and methodologies, with results presented clearly through tables and figures, while knowledge will be shared via conferences and publications.
