Boron monoxide (BO), prepared by the thermal condensation of tetrahydroxydiboron, was first reported in 1955; however, its structure could not be determined. With the recent attention on boron-based two-dimensional materials, such as borophene and hexagonal boron nitride, there is renewed interest in BO. A large number of stable BO structures have been computationally identified, but none are supported by experiments. The consensus is that the material likely forms a boroxine-based two-dimensional material. Herein, we apply advanced B NMR experiments to determine the relative orientations of B(B)O centers in BO. We find that the material is composed of -symmetric OB-BO units that organize to form larger BO rings. Further, powder diffraction experiments additionally reveal that these units organize to form two-dimensional layers with a random stacking pattern. This observation is in agreement with earlier density functional theory (DFT) studies that showed BO-based structures to be the most stable.

Designing cobalt-nickel dual-atoms on boron, nitrogen-codoped carbon nanotubes for carbon dioxide electroreduction to syngas.

Developing highly efficient electrocatalysts to produce syngas with a stable hydrogen/carbon monoxide (H/CO) ratio in a wide potential window via electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO) reduction is desperately required but still challenging. Herein, a dual-atomic site on boron, nitrogen-codoped carbon nanotubes (BCN) has been designed, containing both cobalt (CoN) and nickel (NiNB) sites. Benefiting from the structure advantage and the bifunctional Co/Ni sites, such designed catalyst (CoNi-BCN) demonstrates remarkable performance for syngas production, achieving a stable H/CO ratio of 1.

Heteroatoms are essential to living organisms and present in almost all molecules with medicinal usage. The catalytic functionalization at the carbon-centered radical with an adjacent heteroatom provides an effective way to value added moiety while retaining the unique physicochemical and pharmacological properties of heteroatoms, which can promote the development of pharmaceutical and fine chemical production. Carbonylative transformation was discovered nearly a century ago which is an efficient method for the synthesis of carbonyl-containing molecules with potent applications in both industry and academia.

Carbon monoxide (CO), a significant gas transmitter, plays a vital role in the intricate functioning of living systems and is intimately linked to a variety of physiological and pathological processes. To comprehensively investigate CO within biological system, researchers have widely adopted CORM-3, a compound capable of releasing CO, which serves as a surrogate for CO. It aids in elucidating the physiological and pathological effects of CO within living organisms and can be employed as a therapeutic drug molecule.

Atomic-Resolution Vibrational Mapping of Bilayer Borophene.

Nano Lett

August 2024

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois 60208, United States.

The successful synthesis of borophene beyond the monolayer limit has expanded the family of two-dimensional boron nanomaterials. While atomic-resolution topographic imaging has been previously reported, vibrational mapping has the potential to reveal deeper insight into the chemical bonding and electronic properties of bilayer borophene. Herein, inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) is used to resolve the low-energy vibrational and electronic properties of bilayer-α (BL-α) borophene on Ag(111) at the atomic scale.
