Objective: Early diagnosis of sepsis is crucial to institute appropriate therapy and then to avert a possible negative outcome. We planned this study to evaluate the diagnostic value of presepsin, its sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing sepsis in critically ill patients, and its ability to prognosticate the outcome of sepsis.
Methods: In this prospective observational study, adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at our institute were screened, and those with features suggestive of sepsis were recruited into the study. Procalcitonin (PCT) and presepsin were assessed on the day of admission and day 7 of the ICU stay, apart from routine investigations. Patients were followed for outcome in terms of mortality till 28 days.
Results: The study comprised 82 patients who satisfied the inclusion criteria. Presepsin sensitivity for sepsis diagnosis was determined to be 78%, while that of PCT was determined to be 69%. This gave a combined sensitivity of presepsin and PCT of 93% when used in parallel for the diagnosis of sepsis.
Conclusion: A combination of PCT and presepsin provides higher sensitivity and can be used to screen for sepsis in the ICU.

Introduction: Invasive candidiasis is an important cause of nosocomial infection and recent studies have shown an increase in the number of cases during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The present study aimed to evaluate the epidemiology and incidence of invasive candidiasis before and during the COVID-19 pandemic at a reference tertiary hospital in Brazil.
Methodology: A retrospective observational study was performed with 148 patients infected with Candida spp.

Objective: Early diagnosis of intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICUAW) is crucial for improving the outcomes of critically ill patients. Hence, this study was designed to identify predisposing factors for ICUAW and establish a predictive model for the early diagnosis of ICUAW.
Methods: This prospective observational multicenter study included septic patients from the comprehensive ICUs of West China Hospital of Sichuan University and 10 other hospitals between September and November 2023.

Sepsis-induced acute kidney injury (SI-AKI) is the most common organ dysfunction of sepsis, characterized with prolonged hospitalization periods and significantly elevated mortality rates. Piplartine (PLG), an alkaloid extracted from Piper longum within the Piperaceae family, has exhibited diverse pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-atherosclerotic, and anti-tumor effects. Herein, we investigated whether the PLG could reverse SI-AKI and explore its possible anti-inflammatory mechanisms.

Purpose: This study intends to investigate the relationship between FENDRR and miR-424-5p and their clinical significance in sepsis, aiming to provide new diagnostic markers and prognostic markers for sepsis.
Methods: 136 patients with sepsis and 132 healthy volunteers were included as study subjects. The expression levels of FENDRR and miR-424-5p were detected by qPCR.

Introduction: Sepsis is a serious condition that may lead to death or profoundly affect the well-being of those who survive. The aim of this systematic review was to identify and summarize evidence on the impact of all-cause sepsis on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), physical, cognitive, and psychological outcomes among sepsis survivors in the USA.
Methods: Studies assessing HRQoL, physical, cognitive, and psychological outcomes in patients who survived an episode of sepsis and published from January 1, 2010, to September 30, 2023, were systematically identified through EMBASE, MEDLINE, and MEDLINE In-Process databases, as well as through gray literature.
