In the confined space of supramolecular systems, the substrate can be forced into a reactive conformation and labile intermediates may be stabilized while isolated from the bulk solution. In this highlight, unusual processes mediated by supramolecular hosts are described. These include unfavourable conformational equilibria, unusual product selectivities in bond and ring-chain isomerizations, accelerated rearrangement reactions through labile intermediates, and encapsulated oxidations. In the host, controlled or altered isomerization of the guests can occur hydrophobic, photochemical and thermal interventions. The inner spaces of the hosts resemble enzyme cavities that stabilize labile intermediates not accessible in the bulk solvent. The effects of confinement and the binding forces involved are discussed and further applications are suggested.

The efficacy of ferrihydrite in remediating Cd-contaminated soil is tightly regulated by Fe(II)-induced mineralogical transformations. Despite the common coexistence of iron minerals such as goethite and lepidocrocite, which can act as templates for secondary mineral formation, the impact of these minerals on Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation and the associated Cd fate have yet to be elucidated. Herein, we investigated the simultaneous evolution of secondary minerals and Cd speciation during Fe(II)-induced ferrihydrite transformation in the presence of goethite versus lepidocrocite.

Intramolecular reactions between isocyano and iminophosphorane functions yield species containing an embedded 1,3,2-diazaphosphetidine ring, as result of the [2 + 2] cycloaddition of the primary reactive product, the cyclic carbodiimide, with a second unit of reactant. DFT studies reveal a first rate-determining step entailing a [2 + 1] cycloaddition involving the isocyanide carbon atom and the P═N double bond, with the further intervention of a dipolar precursor of the intermediate carbodiimide. The 1,3,2-diazaphosphetidine ring of the final products is shown to be hydrolytically and thermally labile.

AMPylation is a post-translational modification (PTM) whereby adenosine monophosphate (AMP) from adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is transferred onto protein hydroxyl groups of serine, threonine, or tyrosine. Recently, an actin-dependent AMPylase namely LnaB from the bacterial pathogen Legionella pneumophila was found to AMPylate phosphate groups of phosphoribosylated ubiquitin and Src family kinases. LnaB represents an evolutionarily distinct family of AMPylases with conserved active site Ser-His-Glu residues.

Flavins are well-known endogenous electron shuttles that facilitate long-distance extracellular electron transfer in dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR), but the effects of their photosensitivity on DIR and the transformation of metastable iron (oxyhydr)oxides like ferrihydrite (Fh) remain underexplored. This study compared the kinetics, pathways, and products of Fh transformation catalyzed by aqueous Fe(II) (Fe(II)) in the presence of oxidized riboflavin (RF) at pH 7 under both dark and light conditions. While RF has a negligible impact on Fe(II)-catalyzed Fh transformation in the dark, its photoexcited triplet state (RF*) can significantly accelerate interfacial electron transfer (IET) from Fe(II) to Fh, increasing the reductive dissolution rate of Fh and boosting the accumulation rate of the key intermediate labile Fe(III) (Fe(III)) from 14.

The interest in chromium(III) complexes has been renewed over the past decade for the design of efficient earth-abundant phosphorescent red-to-near-infrared spin-flip emitters and photocatalysts with long excited state lifetimes. In this context, we report the energy tuning of spin-flip excited states based on heteroleptic bis(tridentate) polypyridine chromium(III) complexes , namely, , and with the tridentate ligands L and L [X/Y = NMe, ,'-dimethyl-,'-dipyridin-2-ylpyridine-2,6-diamine; X/Y = CH, 2,6-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)pyridine and X/Y = S, 2,6-bis(pyridine-2-ylthio)pyridine]. The heteroleptic complexes are obtained via a novel synthetic approach toward the required intermediate labile triflato complexes Cr(L)(OTf) () from the respective chlorido precursors CrCl(L) () using trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate.
