We have studied regional anatomical variability in four term placentae, comparing both whole placental regions and intralobar zones and plates. In addition, we have emphasized the need for careful selection of the area to be sampled, rather than strictly randomized sampling of the whole placenta. A unique contribution is our quantitative data for a number of structures of the several intralobar zones and plates. The data confirm the hypothesis that the area best suited to physiological exchange is the central region parabasal plate. The relative homogeneity of the intralobar zones in this area make it a representative area for sampling for various placental studies.

Purpose: N2 non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a heterogeneous disease with an extremely wide range of 5-year survival rates. A composite method of sub-classification for N2 is likely to provide a more accurate method to more finely differentiate prognosis of N2 disease.
Methods: A total of 720 pN2 (T1-4N2M0) NSCLC cases were enrolled in our retrospective analysis of the proposed composite method.
Pulmonary sequestration is an extremely rare malformation and most reported series are therefore small. For this reason an attempt has been made to review our own cases and those reported in the literature in order to describe the radiological appearances and to distinguish between the intralobar and extralobar types. 85% of pulmonary sequestrations are localised in the lower zones, with a distinct preference for the left side.
