This review addresses the importance of Zn for obtaining multifunctional materials with interesting properties by following certain preparation strategies: choosing the appropriate synthesis route, doping and co-doping of ZnO films to achieve conductive oxide materials with p- or n-type conductivity, and finally adding polymers in the oxide systems for piezoelectricity enhancement. We mainly followed the results of studies of the last ten years through chemical routes, especially by sol-gel and hydrothermal synthesis. Zinc is an essential element that has a special importance for developing multifunctional materials with various applications. ZnO can be used for the deposition of thin films or for obtaining mixed layers by combining ZnO with other oxides (ZnO-SnO, ZnO-CuO). Also, composite films can be achieved by mixing ZnO with polymers. It can be doped with metals (Li, Na, Mg, Al) or non-metals (B, N, P). Zn is easily incorporated in a matrix and therefore it can be used as a dopant for other oxidic materials, such as: ITO, CuO, BiFeO and NiO. ZnO can be very useful as a seed layer, for good adherence of the main layer to the substrate, generating nucleation sites for nanowires growth. Thanks to its interesting properties, ZnO is a material with multiple applications in various fields: sensing technology, piezoelectric devices, transparent conductive oxides, solar cells, and photoluminescence applications. Its versatility is the main message of this review.

There is a need for advanced developments to battle aggressive breast cancer variations and to address treatment resistance. In cancer therapy, ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) possess the ability to selectively and effectively induce apoptosis in cancer cells. There is an urgent necessity to create novel anti-cancer therapies, and recent studies indicate that ZnO nanoparticles have significant promise.

This study has investigated the effects of different annealing temperatures on the microstructure, chemical composition, phase structure, and piezoelectric properties of ZnO films. The analysis focuses on how annealing temperature influences the oxygen content and the preferred c-axis (002) orientation of the films. It was found that annealing significantly increases the grain size and optimizes the columnar crystal structure, though excessive high-temperature annealing leads to structural degradation.

This study was conducted to evaluate the material properties of polymer-infiltrated zinc oxide networks (PICN) and the effect of using a phosphate monomer-containing primer applied before polymer infiltration. A total of 148 ZnO-network (zinc oxide) specimens were produced: = 74 were treated with a primer before polymer infiltration and light curing, while the remaining specimens were untreated. Each group was divided into two subgroups ( = 37) based on the infiltrating polymer: UDMA (aliphatic urethane-dimethacrylates)-TEGDMA (triethylene glycol-dimethacrylate) or BisGMA (bisphenol A-glycidyl-methacrylate)-TEGDMA.

This study employed a hydrothermal method to coat CuS onto PbS quantum dots loaded with ZnO, resulting in a core-shell-structured (PbS/ZnO)@CuS hetero-structured photocatalyst. The sulfide coating enhanced the photocatalyst's absorption in the near-infrared to visible light range and effectively reduced electron-hole (h) pair recombination during photocatalytic processes. Electron microscopy analysis confirmed the successful synthesis of this core-shell structure using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP); however, the spatial hindrance effect of PVP led to a disordered arrangement of the CuS lattice, facilitating electron-hole recombination.

This study investigates the synergistic effects of incorporating modified zinc oxide-silica (ZnO-SiO) into tire waste (TW) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) blends, with a focus on crosslinking dynamics, mechanical reinforcement, and antibacterial activity. The addition of ZnO-SiO significantly enhanced crosslink density, as evidenced by increased torque and accelerated cure rates. An optimal concentration of 10 phr was found to yield the highest performance.
