The study aimed to examine leukocyte telomere length (LTL) and serum neuregulin-4 levels and their relationship with disease activity, co-morbidities and body fat distribution in female acromegaly patients. Forty female patients with acromegaly and thirty-nine age and body mass index (BMI) similar healthy female volunteers were included in the study. Patients were classified into two groups: active acromegaly (AA) and controlled acromegaly (CA). The quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method was used to study LTL, and T/S ratio < 1 was accepted as shortened telomere length. Neuregulin-4 was studied by ELISA. There was no difference in median LTL between acromegaly and the control group ( = 0.530). The percentage of T/S < 1 in patients with acromegaly (60.0%) was similar to that of the control group (43.6%) ( = 0.144). However, serum neuregulin-4 was significantly higher in patients with acromegaly than those in the control group ( = 0.037). There were no significant differences concerning LTL, percentage of T/S < 1 and neuregulin-4 levels between active and controlled acromegaly groups ( > 0.05). Neuregulin-4 correlated positively with fasting glucose, triglyceride (TG), triglyceride/glucose (TyG) index, and lean body mass in the acromegaly group. A negative correlation was observed between LTL and neuregulin-4 in the control group ( = 0.039). When the factors affecting neuregulin-4 were evaluated by multivariate linear regression analysis with an enter method, TG (β: 0.316, = 0.025) was independently and positively associated with neuregulin-4. Our findings indicate that acromegaly is associated with unchanged LTL and high neuregulin-4 levels in female patients. However, the relationship between acromegaly, the aging process, and neuregulin-4 involves complex mechanisms, and further studies are needed.

Neuregulin 4 (Nrg4) is a brown fat-enriched endocrine factor that ameliorates lipid metabolism disorders. Autophagy is critical for pancreatic β-cell to counteract lipotoxicity-induced apoptosis. This study aimed at exploring whether Nrg4 attenuates lipotoxicity-induced β-cell apoptosis by regulating autophagy.

Neuregulin 4 (Nrg4), a novel adipokine produced primarily by brown adipose tissue (BAT), has been functionally characterized to exert beneficial effects on modulating energy homeostasis and glucolipid metabolism, and is closely associated with the development and progression of obesity and obesity-associated metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular diseases. Recently, there has been a growing focus on the relationship between circulating Nrg4 levels and T2DM-related vascular complications. In this review, we discussed the known and potential roles of Nrg4 in various physiological and pathological processes, and its association with vascular complications in T2DM, in the aim of finding a potential biomarker recommended for the clinical diagnosis, prognosis and follow-up of T2DM patients at high risk of developing vascular complications as well as providing new therapeutic approaches.

Cardiac remodeling refers to the abnormal changes in cardiac structure and function caused by various pathological conditions. It is an inevitable pathological process in the occurrence and development of heart failure and is related to a variety of cardiovascular diseases. Inflammation and apoptosis are critical pathological processes involved in cardiac remodeling.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers are looking for new ways to discover drugs for chronic kidney disease (CKD) by studying proteins.
  • They used special techniques to analyze data from thousands of people to find links between proteins and CKD.
  • They found that certain proteins are related to CKD risk, with two proteins (TCEA2 and NRG4) being protective, while one protein (GCKR) increases the risk.

Background Obesity has long been a severe threat to public health as an epidemic, and studies on its pathogenesis and treatment have been ongoing. Our study aims to compare the serum levels of bone morphogenetic protein 1 (BMP1), neuregulin 4 (NRG4), and apolipoprotein A5 (ApoA5) in obese and non-obese individuals and investigate their association with obesity. Methodology Our study included a total of 111 participants, of whom 46 were obese (body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m), aged 18-65 years, and had no comorbidities, and 65 were non-obese (BMI = 18.
