(Orchidaceae) is native to mountainous areas of Asia and is a plant species used in traditional medicine for more than two thousand years. The species was reported to have many biological activities, such as neuroprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity. After many years of extensive exploitation from the wild, the plant was added to lists of endangered species. Since its desired cultivation is considered difficult, innovative cultivation methods that can reduce the costs of using new soil in each cycle and at the same time avoid contamination with pathogens and chemicals are urgently needed on large scale. In this work, five samples cultivated in a facility utilizing electron beam-treated soil were compared to two samples grown in the field concerning their chemical composition and bioactivity. Using hyphenated high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) and multi-imaging (UV/Vis/FLD, also after derivatization), the chemical marker compound gastrodin was quantified in the seven rhizome/tuber samples, which showed differences in their contents between facility and field samples and between samples collected during different seasons. Parishin E was also found to be present. Combining HPTLC with on-surface (bio)assays, the antioxidant activity and inhibition of acetylcholinesterase as well as the absence of cytotoxicity against human cells were demonstrated and compared between samples.

Technology-critical elements (TCEs) refer to the elements that play an important role in many emerging technologies and the production of advanced materials, and these include lanthanides, tungsten and vanadium. Actinides, Tl, and Pb, which also belong to TCEs, are abundantly used in power generation, industrial applications, and modern agricultural practices. The information on the influence of these elements on the aquatic environment and biota is still rather scarce.

Hypertension is often asymptomatic and can substantially elevate the risk of cardiovascular complications. Olmesartan medoxomil works by competitively blocking the angiotensin II receptors, preventing angiotensin II from constructing the blood vessels and releasing aldosterone. This discussion is focused on the critical analytical methods used to analyze olmesartan medoxomil in pharmaceutical and biological samples.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the genus Usnea, a group of edible lichens with medicinal uses, aiming to quantify usnic acid in three species using advanced analytical techniques.
  • Quantification methods (HPTLC-MS and UPLC-QTof-MSE) successfully identified usnic acid levels and sixteen different metabolites, showcasing excellent accuracy and linearity in results.
  • The research validates these methods according to ICH guidelines and highlights their potential in profiling herbal formulations containing Usnea spp. for various health applications.

The onflow hyphenation of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in adsorption mode with a benchtop H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer is described for the first time. Protonated solvents and isocratic conditions are used. The sensitivity was increased by choosing suitable NMR acquisition parameter as well as optimizing injection parameters and postacquisition data processing methods.
