Temperature drives ectothermic host - parasite interactions, making them particularly sensitive to climatic variation and change. To isolate the role of temperature, lab-based studies are increasingly used to assess and forecast disease risk under current and future climate conditions. However, in the field, the effects of temperature on parasitism may be mediated by other sources of variation, including local adaptation.

Flatworms depend on stem cells for continued tissue growth and renewal during their life cycles, making these cells valuable drug targets. While neoblasts are extensively characterized in the free-living planarian , and similar stem cells have been characterized in the trematode , their identification and characterization in cestodes is just emerging. Since stem cells are generally affected by irradiation, in this work we used this experimental approach to study the stem cells of the model cestode .

Most studies, however, focused on free-living organisms, but recently, there has been growing interest in understanding trophic interactions of parasites. The crustacean ectoparasite is a well-studied parasite of freshwater teleost fish, which has low host specificity and a cosmopolitan distribution.

Objective: Different Acanthamoeba species are among the most ubiquitous organisms causing serious diseases in humans including central nervous system (CNS) and eye infections. Contact lenses, lens care solutions and the hospital environments particularly the indoor and outdoor environments of ophthalmology wards where people are present with different types of eye diseases, are the potential sources of human infection. The purpose of the present study was the molecular investigation of free-living amoebae in the used contact lenses, lens care solutions and hospital samples from the ophthalmology wards and operating rooms in a referral hospital in southeastern Iran.

A Gram-positive, rod-shaped, and obligate anaerobic bacterial strain OS1-26 was isolated from apple orchard soil in Iksan, South Korea. Interestingly, strain OS1-26 was observed to possess the functional genes involved in biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), including , which was actively transcribed during the anaerobic cultivation with excessive production of extracellular NH despite of presence of other fixed N nutrients. The BNF of strain OS1-26 was distinguished from the other well-known diazotrophs, such as and .
