The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic restrictions have placed many contractual parties under great strain to honour their agreements as contracts have become commercially impracticable and excessively onerous. This article explores the legal position in England, France and the Middle East under the doctrine of impossibility, impracticability and unforeseen circumstances. Strongly rooted in contractual autonomy and commercial certainty, this article argues that frustration in English common law is not sufficiently broad because the consequence (automatic discharge) is too rigid and does not allow a renegotiation of obligations. French civil law is more accommodating but only formally adopted in civil law in 2016, meaning it lacks traction. However, Middle Eastern civil law countries accept the doctrine as an integral part of their law and theory of justice, allowing obligations to be rebalanced in a more flexible manner. The English legal system should consider the advantages of a similar reform.

The mechanical properties of music wire are contingent upon its microstructure, which in turn influences its applications in music. Chinese stringed instruments necessitate exacting standards for comprehensive performance indexes, particularly with regard to the strength, resilience, and rigidity of the musical steel wires, which differ from the Western approach to musical wire. In this study, SWP-B music wire was selected for investigation through metal heat treatment, which was employed to regulate its microstructure characteristics.

The Effect of Relative Humidity on Creep Behavior of Cement Paste Microprism.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Civil Engineering, Laval University, Québec City, QC G1V 0A6, Canada.

Despite decades of extensive studies, the mechanism of concrete creep remains a subject of debate, mainly due to the complex nature of cement microstructure. This complexity is further amplified by the interplay between water and the cement microstructure. The present study aimed to better understand the creep mechanism through creep tests on microprisms of cement paste at hygral equilibrium.

T700 Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Resin Composite Material Hygrothermal Aging Model.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Institute of Process Equipment, College of Energy Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310007, China.

The hygrothermal aging model, based on Fick's second law of diffusion, characterizes the degradation of engineering constants in T700 carbon fiber/epoxy resin composites. It focuses on changes in the tensile modulus, shear modulus, and transverse Poisson's ratio due to moisture absorption and temperature variations. The model validates through mass change observations before and after seawater immersion, along with surface morphology assessments and tensile experiments.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the large deflection problem of bimodular functionally graded truncated thin conical shells under the transverse mechanical load and non-uniform thermal load, in which two different boundary constraints of the truncated shell with two ends simply supported and fully fixed are considered. It is assumed that the temperature distribution along the thickness direction satisfies the Fourier law of heat transfer, and the material properties change exponentially along the thickness direction while different properties in tension and compression are considered. The geometric equation of the conical shell is established based on the equivalent method of curvature correction of von-Kármán deformation theory, and the analytical solution of the problem is obtained by Ritz method.

Challenges and Current Trends in Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance in EU Water Law Context.

Antibiotics (Basel)

December 2024

Division of Pharmaceutical and Medical Law, Department of Social Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Medical University of Gdansk, Tuwima Str. 15, 80-210 Gdansk, Poland.

The increasing consumption of pharmaceuticals, including antibiotics, and their improper disposal have resulted in both pharmaceuticals and their metabolites being released into the environment, where they pose a risk to both ecosystems and human health. One of the most serious threats to public health associated with the presence of antibiotics in the environment is antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In order to combat AMR, the legal aspect of water protection becomes a critical area of action.
