A salivary biomarker panel to detect liver cirrhosis.

Limited access to diagnostic tests for liver fibrosis remains one of the main reasons for late diagnosis, especially in rural and remote communities. Saliva diagnostics is accessible with excellent patient compliance. The aim of this study was to develop a saliva-based diagnostic tool for liver fibrosis/cirrhosis. Salivary concentrations of hyaluronic acid (HA), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), and α-2-macroglobulin (A2MG) were significantly increased (p < 0.05) in patients with liver fibrosis/cirrhosis. By combining these biomarkers, we developed the Saliva Liver Fibrosis (SALF) score, which identified patients with liver cirrhosis with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.970 and 0.920 in a discovery and validation cohorts, respectively. The SALF score had a performance that was similar to that of the current Fibrosis-4 (AUROC:0.740) and Hepascore (AUROC:0.979). We demonstrated the clinical utility of saliva to diagnose liver fibrosis/cirrhosis with a potential to improve the screening for cirrhosis in asymptomatic populations.

Research demonstrates associations between oral health and specific mental health conditions in the general population, yet these relationships remain understudied during pregnancy, despite pregnancy's profound effects on both oral and psychological well-being. Our rapid review examines current evidence on associations between oral health conditions and psychological states (anxiety, depression, and stress) during pregnancy, aiming to inform and strengthen integrated prenatal care strategies. Following PRISMA-RR guidelines, we conducted a systematic search on OVID Medline, CINAHL, and PsycINFO (January 2000-November 2024) for studies examining relationships between oral health conditions (periodontal disease, dental caries) and psychological status during pregnancy and up to one year postpartum.

In addition to the tumor suppressor role of Cullin 7 (Cul7), one of the proteins belonging to the Cullin (Cul) family, studies have also suggested that Cul7 may act as an oncogene under certain conditions. The role of the Cul7 molecule in breast cancer is still unclear, and understanding its function could have significant implications for identifying novel therapeutic targets or improving diagnostic strategies in breast cancer management. In this study, the levels of the Cul7 molecule in plasma and noninvasive material saliva were investigated, and its possibility as a marker for breast cancer was discussed.

The present study aimed to test the efficacy of the chair-side rapid salivary C-reactive protein assay kit in differentiating oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) and oral cancer from normal mucosa using whole salivary samples. In this study, unstimulated saliva samples of cases (OPMDs and oral cancer) and controls (systemically healthy subjects) were used to detect CRP levels using a novel colorimetric, quantitative rapid assay kit. Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA with a post hoc Dunn's test were applied to determine the difference in the mean and SD values between the case and control groups.
