Considering a piecewise linear oscillator with quasiperiodic excitation, we uncover the route of double grazing bifurcation of quasiperiodic torus to strange nonchaotic attractors (i.e., SNAs). The maximum displacement for double grazing bifurcation of the quasiperiodic torus can be obtained analytically. After double grazing of quasiperiodic orbits, the smooth quasiperiodic torus wrinkles increasingly with the continuous change of the parameter. Subsequently, the whole quasiperiodic torus loses the smoothness by becoming everywhere non-differentiable, which indicates the birth of SNAs. The Lyapunov exponent is adopted to verify the nonchaotic property of the SNA. The strange property of SNAs can be characterized by the phase sensitivity, the power spectrum, the singular continuous spectrum, and the fractal structure. Our detailed analysis shows that the SNAs induced by double grazing may exist in a short parameter interval between 1 T quasiperiodic orbit and 2 T quasiperiodic orbit or between 1 T quasiperiodic orbit and 4 T quasiperiodic orbit or between 1 T quasiperiodic orbit and chaotic motion. Noteworthy, SNAs may also exist in a large parameter interval after double grazing, which does not lead to any quasiperiodic or chaotic orbits.

Double-pentagon silicon chains in a quasi-1D Si/Ag(001) surface alloy.

Nat Commun

CNR-Istituto di Struttura della Materia (CNR-ISM), Rome, Italy.

Silicon surface alloys and silicide nanolayers are highly important as contact materials in integrated circuit devices. Here we demonstrate that the submonolayer Si/Ag(001) surface reconstruction, reported to exhibit interesting topological properties, comprises a quasi-one-dimensional Si-Ag surface alloy based on chains of planar double-pentagon Si moieties. This geometry is determined using a combination of density functional theory calculations, scanning tunnelling microscopy, and grazing incidence x-ray diffraction simulations, and yields an electronic structure in excellent agreement with photoemission measurements.

Several experimental evidences and field data documented that zooplankton may alter its behavioral response in the presence of toxic phytoplankton, reducing its consumption to the point of starvation. This paper is devoted to the mathematical study of such interactions of toxic phytoplankton with grazer zooplankton. The non-toxic phytoplankton is assumed to adopt a density-dependent refuge strategy to avoid over-predation by zooplankton.

Effects of genetic and environmental trends from 1970 to 2020 on farm efficiency estimated with a whole-farm modeling system.

Department of Animal Science, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802. Electronic address:

The objectives of this study were to evaluate associations of genetic change, cow management and nutrition, inbreeding, and crop yields from 1970 to 2020 with measures of production and economic efficiency according to a whole-farm model, and to evaluate effects of genetic change in individual traits on economic efficiency in comparison to expectations from economic selection indexes. Genetic and phenotypic performance metrics for Holsteins from 1970 and 2020 were retrieved and input into the Integrated Farm System Model (IFSM) for a 7,000-cow Texas herd and a 50-cow Pennsylvania grazing herd. Crop yields estimates from 1970 and 2020 were retrieved, and farm hectarage was altered so that forage and energy concentrate requirements were met through farm production; likewise, scenarios evaluating effects of atmospheric CO fertilization (COF) on crop yield were evaluated by altering farm hectarage.

Electrostatic Correlations Lead to High Capacitance in Zwitterion-Containing Thin Films.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

Department of Chemistry, Simon Fraser University, 8888 University Drive, Burnaby, British Columbia V5A 1S6, Canada.

A novel zwitterion composed of an imidazolium tethered to an anionic sulfonyl(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide group was prepared as an alternative dielectric material to traditional ionic liquids. The zwitterion not only melted below 100 °C but also proved to be nonhygroscopic. High-capacitance organic dielectric materials were obtained by blending this compound with poly(methyl methacrylate) over a range of concentrations and thicknesses.

The New Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics (NewAthena) will be the largest space-based X-ray observatory ever built. It will have an effective area above 1.1 m at 1 keV, which corresponds to a polished mirror surface of about 300 m due to the grazing incidence.
