The combination of instrumental techniques allows obtaining precise and reliable information about the reactions taking place at the electrode/solution interface. Although UV-Vis absorption spectroelectrochemistry (UV-Vis SEC) provides a molecular insight about the species involved in the electrode process, obtaining information about the redox state of the products generated in this process is not always accessible by this technique. In this sense, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) has a clear advantage, since it provides additional information on the oxidation state of the intermediates/products. Therefore, the combination of these two techniques facilitates obtaining a more complete picture of the electrochemical reaction studied from two different points of view, but under exactly the same experimental conditions. In this work, the combination of UV-Vis SEC in parallel configuration and SECM is carried out for the first time. This new technique allows distinguishing between those species that are electrochemically active and, at the same time, exhibit changes in the UV-Vis absorption spectra during the electrochemical reaction. The new experimental setup is first validated using ferrocenemethanol as a standard probe, concomitantly obtaining spectroscopic and electrochemical information that accurately describes the oxidation process. Finally, the strength of this combined technique is demonstrated by studying the antioxidant activity of -vanillin (-HVa) in the presence of electrogenerated superoxide. The information extracted from the new UV-Vis SEC/SECM technique makes it possible to identify, beyond any doubt, not only the origin of the electrochemical signals recorded in the SECM tip but also to evaluate the antioxidant effect of -HVa at different concentrations.

β-carbolines (βCs) represent a large family of bioactive alkaloids, including norharmane and normelinonine F, known for their diverse pharmacological activities. The effects of these alkaloids may depend, among other factors, on their delivery, accumulation in different subcellular compartments, and interactions with biomacromolecules such as serum albumins. In this study, we investigated the pH dependence of the interactions between bovine serum albumin (BSA) and four βCs (norharmane, normelinonine F, and their corresponding N(9)-methyl derivatives) using UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, combined with multivariate analysis and molecular docking.

The excessive use of organophosphorus pesticides poses a substantial threat to both human health and the environment. Consequently, there is an urgent need for new methods that can quickly degrade and sensitively detect these compounds. A versatile nanozyme based on the biomimetic principle is an effective strategy to solve this problem.

As one of the most harmful heavy metal pollutants, hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) is becoming a serious threat to human health. Thus pursuing a remarkably sensitive method to monitor the Cr(VI) concentration in natural conditions is favored for the fast response to prevent harm. In the present work, an ethylenediamine (En) and SiO-modified wool keratin-based carbon quantum dot (CQD)(En@CQDs@SiO) fluorescent sensor is prepared, and the En is found to improve the discrimination ability by binding the Cr(VI) with the surface carboxyl groups.

Background: Excessive lipogenesis of the skin triggers some dermatological concerns, such as enlarged pores, acne, and blackheads. Although topical drug treatments can offer temporary relief, their prolonged usage may lead to side effects of dryness, irritation, or allergic reactions. Consequently, the development of safer and efficacious ingredients in cosmetics for managing sebum overproduction represents a significant yet challenging endeavor.
