Age-related gut microbes and urine metabolites were investigated in 568 healthy individuals using metataxonomics and metabolomics. The richness and evenness of the fecal microbiota significantly increased with age, and the abundance of 16 genera differed between the young and old groups. Additionally, 17 urine metabolites contributed to the differences between the young and old groups. Among the microbes that differed by age, and 9 were confirmed to be correlated with some urine metabolites. The machine learning algorithm eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) was shown to produce the best performing age predictors, with a mean absolute error of 5.48 years. The accuracy of the model improved to 4.93 years with the inclusion of urine metabolite data. This study shows that the gut microbiota and urine metabolic profiles can be used to predict the age of healthy individuals with relatively good accuracy.

Doping with meclofenoxate, a nootropic stimulant prohibited in-competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), is identified through the primary marker of urinary 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (4-CPA). However, the presence of 4-CPA can also arise from permissible sources. This study ventured into comparing urinary excretion patterns among exposures to permitted chemicals (chlorphenesin and 4-CPA) and the banned stimulant (meclofenoxate) and interpreting the analytical findings according to the reporting requirements.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), also known as dimethyl sulfone, is a naturally occurring sulphur-containing compound that can be found in plants, animals and humans. MSM can also be a metabolite of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Due to their anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, both MSM and DMSO are prohibited substances in horseracing.

Background: An increasing number of animal studies have indicated that exposure to phthalate esters (PAEs) may cause high blood pressure. However, population-based evidence is limited, particularly for pregnant women and young children.

Objective: To examine the correlation between prenatal exposure to phthalate ester metabolites (mPAEs) and blood pressure in preschool children.

Benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) are priority pollutants known for their hematotoxicity and carcinogenic properties. Benzene is further metabolized to phenyl mercapturic acid (PMA), toluene and xylene also generate benzyl mercapturic acid (BMA) in human urine. To confirm whether the exposure to benzene series comes from the workplace or from the external environment such as smoking is a very meaningful work, so accurate measurement of their biomarkers in biological samples is crucial.

In this study, an automatic magnetic solid phase extraction method was developed to determine six parent neonicotinoids (NEOs) and three of their metabolites in breast milk, serum and urine samples. As key extraction parameters, the sorbent amount, washing solvent and elution solvent were optimized to 4 mg of HLB packing magnetic sorbent, pure water and acetonitrile, respectively. Recoveries of the analytes ranged between 81% and 121% for bovine milk samples, 64% and 122% for fetal bovine serum samples and 81% and 109% for pooled urine samples, with RSDs of <20%.
