Photothermal therapy (PTT) is an effective and well-documented approach to thermally ablate tumors. However, the side effect of distal metastasis and recurrence limit its further expansion. At the same time as PTT was developed, the employment of imaging to monitor the treatment of tumors also became meaningful. Herein, as a proof of concept, gadolinium-doped mesoporous carbon nanoparticles (Gd-MCNs) were prepared as nanocarriers, MRI contrast agents, and PTT agents by a one-step hard template method, which realized Gd doping and carbon filling simultaneously, while retaining enough pore space for drug loading. After loading the immune adjuvant, R837, and the coating of tumor extracellular vesicle, the obtained biomimetic nanoparticles (EV@Gd-MCNs-R837) not only allowed tumor MRI, but also inhibited the primary tumor and its metastasis with long-term immune memory . This study provides proof for the potential of Gd-MCNs-based biomimetic nanoparticles for targeted PTT/immune-enhanced synergistic theranostic of tumors.

Solid Oxide Cell Electrode Nanocomposites Fabricated by Inkjet Printing Infiltration of Ceria Scaffolds.

The enhancement of solid oxide cell (SOC) oxygen electrode performance through the generation of nanocomposite electrodes via infiltration using wet-chemistry processes has been widely studied in recent years. An efficient oxygen electrode consists of a porous backbone and an active catalyst, which should provide ionic conductivity, high catalytic activity and electronic conductivity. Inkjet printing is a versatile additive manufacturing technique, which can be used for reliable and homogeneous functionalization of SOC electrodes via infiltration for either small- or large-area devices.

Curcumin is a kind of anti-cancer chemotherapeutic drug and has been demonstrated to be able to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) under the stimuli of ultrasound (US). Herein, gadolinium-doped hollow mesoporous silica nanospheres (Gd-HMSNs) loaded with curcumin (Cur) and conjugated with carboxymethyl dextran (CMD) have been facilely fabricated and applied for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided synergistic cancer sonodynamic-chemotherapy. The as-prepared multifunctional theranostic nanoplatform (Cur@Gd-HMSNs-CMD) shows high drug loading capacity, satisfactory biocompatibility, pH-responsive degradation, and US-triggered drug release.

Gadolinium-doped mesoporous calcium silicate/chitosan scaffolds enhanced bone regeneration ability.

Chitosan (CTS) and mesoporous calcium silicate (MCS) have been developed for bone defect healing; however, their bone regeneration capacity still does not satisfy the patients with bone diseases. Gadolinium (Gd) is accumulated in human bones, and plays a beneficial role in regulating cell performance and bone regeneration. We firstly constructed Gd-doped MCS/CTS (Gd-MCS/CTS) scaffolds by a lyophilization technology.

Background: Biomaterial-induced osteogenesis is mainly related to hierarchically porous structures and bioactive components. Rare earth elements are well known to promote osteogenesis and stimulate bone repair; however, the underlying biological effects of gadolinium (Gd) element on bone regeneration are not yet known.

Methods: In this study, we successfully fabricated gadolinium-doped bioglass (Gd-BG) scaffolds by combining hollow mesoporous Gd-BG microspheres with chitosan and evaluated in vitro effects and underlying mechanisms with Cell Counting Kit-8, scanning electron microscopy, alkaline phosphatase, Alizarin red staining, and polymerase chain reaction.
