More than 1 million people are estimated to have lower limb venous ulceration in the UK. Such wounds are predominantly caused by sustained venous hypertension, as a result of chronic venous insufficiency, often due to venous valve incompetence or an impaired calf muscle pump. Compression therapy is key to venous leg ulcer management and the majority of nurses are aware of the importance of starting patients on compression therapy as early as possible. However, there appears to be a lack of awareness of the importance of venous assessment and that more patients could benefit from endovenous correction of superficial venous incompetence.

Background: Tranexamic acid (TXA) use has become the gold standard in total joint arthroplasty to limit intraoperative blood loss and transfusion rates. More recently, the indications for TXA have expanded to knee and shoulder arthroscopy with promising early results. However, the effectiveness of TXA during arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (RCR) is unclear.

Background: The fluorescent dye indocyanine green (ICG) has been used to identify anatomical structures intraoperatively in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using ICG to assess graft patency and territorial distribution of myocardial reperfusion during CABG.
Methods: Porcine arrested hearts (n = 18) were used to evaluate territorial distribution of native coronary arteries and of a coronary bypass constructed with porcine saphenous vein graft (SVG) using ICG.

One-lung ventilation is commonly used in lateral open chest surgery; however, it can increase pulmonary vascular resistance, which negatively affects Fontan circulation. Nevertheless, one-lung ventilation has a positive indication in post-Fontan patients. It allows surgery with lateral minimally invasive thoracotomy, which does not require a median sternotomy.
