Automatic positioning of cutting planes for bone tumor resection surgery.

Med Biol Eng Comput

January 2025

Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Florence, Via Di Santa Marta 3, 50139, Florence, Italy.

In bone tumor resection surgery, patient-specific cutting guides aid the surgeon in the resection of a precise part of the bone. Despite the use of automation methodologies in surgical guide modeling, to date, the placement of cutting planes is a manual task. This work presents an algorithm for the automatic positioning of cutting planes to reduce healthy bone resected and thus improve post-operative outcomes.

Background: The current evaluation of surgical resident operative autonomy consists primarily of self-report and is prone to bias. Objective performance indicators (OPIs) generated from the da Vinci Surgical System capture objective intraoperative data providing an opportunity to evaluate the intraoperative resident experience more accurately. This study investigates the ability of OPIs to describe resident autonomy during robotic cholecystectomy.

Utilization of Total Knee Arthroplasty in the United States by Settlement Type: Is There Equity of Access?

J Am Acad Orthop Surg

January 2025

From the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, OH (Huffman, Khan, Pasqualini, Rullán, Walsh, and Piuzzi), the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH (Oyem and Runsewe), and the Orthopaedic Institute Brielle Orthopaedics, Division of Adult Reconstruction, Manasquan, New Jersey (Siddiqi).

Introduction: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the most commonly performed orthopaedic surgeries in the United States, yet little information exists regarding its utilization in different settlement types. This study aimed to determine the number of TKA-performing surgeons by settlement type and assess trends in the volume of TKAs in urban, micropolitan, small town, and rural settings.

Methods: Using the Medicare Provider Utilization and Payment Data: Physician and Other Practitioners database, the number of orthopaedic surgeons performing primary and revision TKAs from 2013 to 2020 was determined.

Background: Gastric cancer remains a major global health challenge, ranking fourth in cancer-related deaths. Total gastrectomy with lymphadenectomy is the standard treatment, with advancements in surgery shifting towards minimally invasive techniques to reduce surgical trauma and metabolic response. Esophagojejunal anastomotic leak is a frequent complication of gastrectomy, significantly increasing morbidity and mortality rates by up to 64%.

The role of the hippocampus in working memory and word reading: Novel neural correlates of reading among youth living in the context of economic disadvantage.

Dev Cogn Neurosci

December 2024

Child Mind Institute, New York, NY, USA; Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA. Electronic address:

A left-lateralized cortical reading circuit underlies successful reading and fails to engage in individuals with reading problems. Studies identifying this circuit included youth from economically advantaged backgrounds and focused on cortical, not subcortical, structures. However, among youth with low scores on reading tests who are living in the context of economic disadvantage, this brain network is actively engaged during reading, despite persistent reading problems.
