An airtight, anoxic bubble-column sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was developed for the rapid cultivation of perchlorate (ClO) and nitrate (NO) reducing granular sludge (GS) in this study. Feast/famine conditions and shear force selection pressures in tandem with a short settling time (2-min) as a hydraulic section pressure resulted in the accelerated formation of anoxic granular activated sludge (AxGS). ClO and NO were efficiently (>99.9%) reduced over long-term (>500-d) steady-state operation. Specific NO reduction, ClO reduction, chloride production, and non-purgeable dissolved organic carbon (DOC) oxidation rates of 5.77 ± 0.54 mg NO-N/g VSS·h, 8.13 ± 074 mg ClO/g VSS·h, 2.40 ± 0.0 mg Cl/g VSS·h, and 16.0 ± 0.06 mg DOC/g VSS·h were recorded within the reactor under steady-state conditions, respectively. The AxGS biomass cultivated in this study exhibited faster specific ClO reduction, NO reduction, and DOC oxidation rates than flocculated biomass cultivated under similar conditions and AxGS biomass operated in an up-flow anaerobic sludge blank (UASB) bioreactor receiving the same influent loading. EPS peptide identification revealed a suite of extracellular catabolic enzymes. Dechloromonas species were present in high abundance throughout the entirety of this study. This is one of the initial studies on anoxic granulation to simultaneously treat hazardous chemicals and adds to the science of the granular activated sludge process.

Widespread polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET MPs) have played unintended role in nitrous oxide (NO) turnovers (i.e., production and consumption) at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).

Pharmaceuticals and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent organic micropollutants (OMPs) posing environmental and health risks due to their bioaccumulative nature and potential toxicity. These OMPs spread to the environment due to the extensive use in today's society. Conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are not designed to effectively remove these contaminants, making WWTPs an important pathway, especially for pharmaceuticals, to the aquatic environment.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are recalcitrant organic pollutants often detected in stormwater. Various stormwater control measures (SCMs) can remove PAHs and PCBs by filtration, adsorption, and biodegradation. However, dissolved PAHs and PCBs remain present in the treated outflow of SCMs.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the primary causes of mortality and disability, with arterial blood pressure being an important factor in the clinical management of TBI. Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), widely used as a model of essential hypertension and vascular dementia, demonstrate dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which may contribute to glucocorticoid-mediated hippocampal damage. The aim of this study was to assess acute post-TBI seizures, delayed mortality, and hippocampal pathology in SHRs and normotensive Sprague Dawley rats (SDRs).

Background: Our group and others have recently identified four molecular groups of meningioma, with unique underlying biology and outcomes. The relevance of group-specific metabolite profiles (particularly among hypermetabolic tumours), has not been explored.
Methods: We performed untargeted metabolic profiling of meningiomas representing each molecular group and WHO grade.
