The type VI secretion system (T6SS) is used by bacteria for virulence, resistance to grazing, and competition with other bacteria. We previously demonstrated that the role of the T6SS in interbacterial competition and in resistance to grazing is enhanced in in the presence of subinhibitory concentrations of polymyxin B. Here, we performed a global quantitative proteomic analysis and a targeted transcriptomic analysis of the T6SS-known regulators in grown with and without polymyxin B. The proteome of is greatly modified by polymyxin B with more than 39% of the identified cellular proteins displaying a difference in their abundance, including T6SS-related proteins. We identified a regulator whose abundance and expression are increased in the presence of polymyxin B, , the response regulator of the two-component system VxrAB (VCA0565-66). In , and deficient mutants, the expression of both copies (VC1415 and VCA0017), although globally reduced, was not modified by polymyxin B. These genes encode an identical protein Hcp, which is the major component of the T6SS syringe. Thus, the upregulation of the T6SS in the presence of polymyxin B appears to be, at least in part, due to the two-component system VxrAB.

Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzymes are involved in many cellular processes and possess unequalled catalytic versatility. Rational design through site-directed mutagenesis is a powerful strategy for creating tailor-made enzymes for a wide range of biocatalytic applications. PLP-dependent methionine γ-lyase (MGL), which degrades sulfur-containing amino acids, is an encouraging enzyme for many therapeutic purposes - from combating bacterial resistant strains and fungi to antitumor activity.

Increasing annual soil salinization poses a major threat to global ecological security. Soil microorganisms play an important role in improving plant adaptability to stress tolerance, however, the mechanism of saline-alkali tolerance to plants associated with rhizosphere microbiome is unclear. We investigated the composition and structure of the rhizospheric bacteria and fungi communities of the saline-alkali tolerant (Oryza sativa var.

Significance: Machine learning models for the direct extraction of tissue parameters from hyperspectral images have been extensively researched recently, as they represent a faster alternative to the well-known iterative methods such as inverse Monte Carlo and inverse adding-doubling (IAD).

Aim: We aim to develop a Bayesian neural network model for robust prediction of physiological parameters from hyperspectral images.

Approach: We propose a two-component system for extracting physiological parameters from hyperspectral images.

As a universal language across the bacterial kingdom, the quorum sensing signal autoinducer-2 (AI-2) can coordinate many bacterial group behaviors. However, unknown AI-2 receptors in bacteria may be more than what has been discovered so far, and there are still many unknown functions for this signal waiting to be explored. Here, we have identified a membrane-bound histidine kinase of the pathogenic bacterium , AsrK, as a receptor that specifically detects AI-2 under low boron conditions.
