AI Article Synopsis

  • The study focused on measuring the thickness of the pronator quadratus muscle in 15 cadavers, noting that there's limited research on this topic.
  • Significant differences were found in muscle thickness between male and female cadavers.
  • The width of the muscle was found to be proportional to the length of the radius bone in the forearm.

Article Abstract

There is a paucity of literature documenting the cadaveric muscle thickness of pronator quadratus. We measured the width and depth of this muscle bilaterally in 15 cadavers. There was a significant difference in thickness between male and female cadavers, but the width was proportional to radius length.

Background Pronator quadratus (PQ) acts as the pronator of the wrist and stabiliser of the distal radioulnar joint; it also provides a protective cover over the edge of the plate, preventing friction and subsequent rupture of flexor tendons. The repair of PQ is often difficult, and its durability is questionable; hence, preserving the PQ while volar plating distal radius fractures is advocated. Methods In this prospective randomised trial, 60 patients with a fracture of the distal end of the radius of AO-type (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen) 23 A2, A3, B1, B3, C1, and C2 were treated with volar plate fixation using either the PQ-releasing and repair approach (Group A, n = 30) or the PQ-sparing approach (Group B, n = 30), allowed by simple randomisation.

An unstable distal radioulnar joint can cause ulnar-sided wrist pain. Stability of the distal radioulnar joint, which varies among individuals, is dependent on the bony structure of the sigmoid notch and the surrounding soft tissues, such as the interosseous membrane, the extensor carpi ulnaris tendon, the pronator quadratus, and the deep radioulnar ligaments. In particular, avulsions of the deep radioulnar ligaments lead to instability and disturbed wrist proprioception.

Background: Wrist osteoarthritis poses significant challenges in pain management and functional impairment. Current surgical interventions often sacrifice wrist motion and entail long recovery times. Minimally invasive denervation offers a promising alternative by targeting sensory nerves.

Evaluation of electrical activity at the carpal tunnel area in response to median nerve elbow stimulation using magnetoneurography.

Clin Neurophysiol

October 2023

Department of Advanced Technology in Medicine, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, 1-5-45 Yushima, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-8519, Japan. Electronic address:

Objective: To develop a magnetic field measurement method in the carpal tunnel area in response to electrical median nerve stimulation at the elbow and evaluate its usefulness.

Methods: Five healthy subjects participated. The magnetic field recording evoked by median nerve electrical stimulation at the elbow with electrical intensity that minimized the pronator quadratus and flexor carpi radialis muscle response was measured with 132-channel superconducting quantum interference device magnetoneurography.

Morphometric and anatomic characteristics of pronator quadratus muscle.

Chin J Traumatol

September 2024

Anatomy Department, Istanbul Medicine Faculty, Istanbul University, Istanbul, 34093, Turkey.

Purpose: In surgical procedures commonly employed for the management of scaphoid and distal radial fractures, the incision and dissection of the pronator quadratus muscle play a pivotal role. Nevertheless, comprehensive investigations into the anatomical intricacies of the pronator quadratus muscle have been relatively scarce within the clinical community. In light of this, our study endeavors to make a substantive contribution to the medical literature by conducting a meticulous examination of the morphology and morphometry of this muscle.
