Half-Electrolysis of Water with the Aid of a Supercapacitor Electrode.

Published: June 2023

Half-electrolysis runs one desirable half-cell reaction with the aid of a counter supercapacitor electrode which replaces the other unwanted half-cell reaction occurred inevitably in conventional electrolysis. Herein, it is developed to complete the whole cell reaction of water electrolysis, in alternative steps, with a capacitive activated carbon (AC) electrode and an electrolysis Pt electrode. When positively charging the AC electrode, a hydrogen evolution reaction occurs at the Pt electrode. By reversing the current, the charge stored in the AC electrode is discharged to assist the oxygen evolution reaction on the same Pt electrode. Consecutive completion of the two processes realizes the overall reaction of water electrolysis. This strategy leads to stepwise production of H and O without the need of a diaphragm in the cell and hence results in a lower energy consumption compared with the practical conventional electrolysis.

Effect of sex on the levels of total arsenic (As) and As(III) in dog urine: a preliminary study.

Pol J Vet Sci

June 2024

Department of Animal Physiology and Physiotherapy, Faculty of Animal Breeding and Biology, Bydgoszcz University of Science and Technology, Mazowiecka 28, 85-084 Bydgoszcz, Poland.

The aim of the study was to analyze differences in the concentration of total arsenic (As) and As(III) in urine depending on the sex of mixed-breed dogs. Therefore, a research hypothesis was put forward that sex is a variable determining the degree and efficiency of urinary arsenic excretion. Two study groups were established: female (group 1) and male (group 2) mixed-breed dogs of similar body weight (9-13 kg) and aged 8-11 years.

Background: Patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) undergoing spinal cord stimulation (SCS) for arousal treatment require an assessment of their conscious state before and after the procedure. This is typically evaluated using behavioral scales (CRS-R), but this method can be influenced by the subjectivity of the physician. Event-related potentials (ERP) and EEG power spectrum are associated with the recovery of consciousness.

Background: Long-term use of levodopa, a metabolic precursor of dopamine (DA) for alleviation of motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), can cause a serious side effect known as levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID). With the development of LID, high-frequency gamma oscillations (~100 Hz) are registered in the motor cortex (MCx) in patients with PD and rats with experimental PD. Studying alterations in the activity within major components of motor networks during transition from levodopa-off state to dyskinesia can provide useful information about their contribution to the development of abnormal gamma oscillations and LID.

Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts for Anion Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers: Progress and Perspective.

JACS Au

December 2024

Shanghai Key Laboratory for R&D and Application of Metallic Functional Materials, Institute of New Energy for Vehicles, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tongji University, 201804, Shanghai, China.

For the aim of achieving the carbon-free energy scenario, green hydrogen (H) with non-CO emission and high energy density is regarded as a potential alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Over the last decades, significant breakthroughs have been realized on the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which is a fundamental advancement and efficient process to generate high-purity H in the laboratory. Based on this, the development of the practical industry-oriented anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE) is on the rise, showing competitiveness with the incumbent megawatt-scale H production technologies.

Zeolite coatings are studied as molecular sieves for membrane separation, membrane reactors, and chemical sensor applications. They are also studied as anticorrosive films for metals and alloys, antimicrobial and hydrophobic films for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, and dielectrics for semiconductor applications. Zeolite coatings are synthesized by hydrothermal, ionothermal, and dry-gel conversion approaches, which require high process temperatures and lengthy times (ranging from hours to days).
