Synthetic biology (SynBio) has attracted like no other recent development the attention not only of Life Science researchers and engineers but also of intellectuals, technology think-tanks, and private and public investors. This is largely due to its promise to propel biotechnology beyond its traditional realms in medicine, agriculture, and environment toward new territories historically dominated by the chemical and manufacturing industries─but now claimed to be amenable to complete . For this to happen, it is crucial for the field to remain true to its foundational engineering drive, which relies on mathematics and quantitative tools to construct practical solutions to real-world problems. This article highlights several SynBio themes that, in our view, come with somewhat precarious promises that need to be tackled. First, SynBio must critically examine whether enough basic information is available to enable the design or redesign of life processes and turn biology from a descriptive science into a prescriptive one. Second, unlike circuit boards, cells are built with soft matter and possess inherent abilities to mutate and evolve, even without external cues. Third, the field cannot be presented as the one technical solution to many grave world problems and so must avoid exaggerated claims and hype. Finally, SynBio should pay heed to public sensitivities and involve social science in its development and growth, and thus change the technology narrative from sheer domination of the living world to conversation and win-win partnership.

Heavy metal pollution is a major environmental and health problem due to the toxicity and persistence of metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic in water, soil, and air. Advances in sensor technology have significantly improved the detection and quantification of heavy metals, providing real-time monitoring and mitigation tools. This review explores recent developments in heavy metal detection, focusing on innovative uses of immobilized chromogenic reagents, nanomaterials, perovskites, and nanozymes.

New semisynthetic α-glucosidase inhibitor from a doubly-chemically engineered extract.

Nat Prod Bioprospect

Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas, Suipacha 531, S2002LRK, Rosario, Argentina.

Chemically engineered extracts represent a promising source of new bioactive semi-synthetic molecules. Prepared through direct derivatization of natural extracts, they can include constituents enriched with elements and sub-structures that are less common in natural products compared to drugs. Fourteen such extracts were prepared through sequential reactions with hydrazine and a fluorinating reagent, and their α-glucosidase inhibition properties were compared.

Advancements in microalgal biomass conversion for rubber composite applications.

Carbon black (CB) as rubber reinforcement has raised environmental concerns regarding this traditional petroleum-based filler, which is less susceptible to biodegradability. Although it has great reinforcing properties, the production technique is no longer sustainable, and its cost increases regularly. For these reasons, it is wise to look for sustainable replacement materials.

Despite recent advancements in organic photovoltaics (OPVs), further improvements in power conversion efficiency (PCE) and device lifetime are necessary for commercial viability. Strategies such as optimizing the molecular orientation and minimizing the charge traps of organic films are particularly effective in enhancing photovoltaic performance. In this study, we successfully utilized vacuum electrospray deposition (VESD) to achieve favourable face-on stacking geometries while preserving the integrity of the interfaces in poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT): [6,6]-phenyl-C-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) bulk heterojunction (BHJ) films.

Unveiling the uncommon: hypoplasia of external iliac artery-a case report and literature review.

J Cardiothorac Surg

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, The Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University, Shijiazhuang, Hebei, 050000, P. R. China.

The absence or dysplasia of the iliac artery(IA) is an exceedingly rare condition, with limited cases documented in the literature. In this report, we present a case of hypoplasia of the right external iliac artery (EIA) in a 69-year-old male patient. The patient presented with right lower abdominal pain attributed to an aneurysm of the right internal iliac artery (IIA), yet notably, there was no evidence of lower limb ischemia at the time of consultation.
