A large number of similarities have previously been noted between the blood and milk clotting phenomena [Jollès, P. (1975) Mol. Cell. Biochem. 7, 73-85; Jollès, P. & Henschen, A. (1982) Trends Biochem. Sci. 7, 325-328]: some analogous features have also been found between fibrinogen and kappa-casein. In this connection, the effect of a natural and a synthetic peptide derived from kappa-casein on platelet function was studied: the undecapeptide Met-Ala-Ile-Pro-Pro-Lys-Lys-Asn-Gln-Asp-Lys (residues 106----116 of cow kappa-casein) inhibited both aggregation of ADP-treated platelets and binding of 125I-fibrinogen to ADP-treated platelets: its behaviour was similar to that of the structurally related C-terminal dodecapeptide of human fibrinogen gamma-chain.

The global pandemic of COVID-19 is considered one of the most catastrophic events on earth. During the pandemic, food ingredients may play crucial roles in preventing infectious diseases and sustaining people's general health and well-being. Animal milk acts as a super food since it has the capacity to minimize the occurrence of viral infections due to inherent antiviral properties of its ingredients.

Development of Cellulose Nanofibril/Casein-Based 3D Composite Hemostasis Scaffold for Potential Wound-Healing Application.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

Biofuels Institute, School of the Environment and Safety Engineering, Jiangsu University, 301 Xuefu Road, Zhenjiang 212013, China.

Excessive bleeding in traumatic hemorrhage is the primary concern for natural wound healing and the main reason for trauma deaths. The three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting of bioinks offers the desired structural complexity vital for hemostasis activity and targeted cell proliferation in rapid and controlled wound healing. However, it is challenging to develop suitable bioinks to fabricate specific 3D scaffolds desirable in wound healing.

Hemorrhage is a leading cause of preventable death in both military combat and civilian accidents. To overcome these challenges, an affordable and effective bandage is must required substance. A novel strategy is reported for developing chitosan-casein (CC) based self-assembled nanofibrous polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) for rapid blood clotting.

Novel Catalytically-Inactive PII Metalloproteinases from a Viperid Snake Venom with Substitutions in the Canonical Zinc-Binding Motif.

Toxins (Basel)

Instituto Clodomiro Picado, Facultad de Microbiología, Universidad de Costa Rica, San José 11501, Costa Rica.

Snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs) play key biological roles in prey immobilization and digestion. The majority of these activities depend on the hydrolysis of relevant protein substrates in the tissues. Hereby, we describe several isoforms and a cDNA clone sequence, corresponding to PII SVMP homologues from the venom of the Central American pit viper , which have modifications in the residues of the canonical sequence of the zinc-binding motif HEXXHXXGXXH.

Platelet-activating factor (PAF) promotes tumour metastasis via activation of the transcription factor nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB). We here investigated the role of the protein kinase CK2 (formerly Casein Kinase 2 or II) in PAF-induced NF-κB activation and tumour metastasis, given that PAF has been reported to increase CK2 activity, and that CK2 plays a key role in NF-κB activation. PAF increased CK2 activity, phosphorylation and protein expression in vivo as well as in vitro.
