Catalytic cyclotrimerization routes to symmetrical [9]helical indenofluorene were explored by using different transition-metal complexes and thermal conditions. Depending on the reaction conditions, the cyclotrimerizations were accompanied by dehydro-Diels-Alder reaction giving rise to another type of aromatic compounds. Structures of both symmetrical [9]helical cyclotrimerization product as well as the dehydro-Diels-Alder product were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Limits of enantioselective cyclotrimerization were assessed as well. DFT calculations shed light on the reaction course and the origin of diminished enantioselectivity.

Background: Neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD), are composed of highly phosphorylated forms of the microtubule-associated protein tau. Phosphorylation results from the activity of several threonine/serine kinases, and increased expression of glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β). These are involved in the formation of paired helical filament (PHF)-tau, which induces the formation of NFTs.

Circular dichroism mapping (CDM) method was introduced by utilizing the highly collimated light beam of synchrotron radiation (SR) available at Diamond Light Source B23 beamline for scanning the thin films of the N phase. We apply SR-CDM to two achiral dimeric materials exhibiting the N phase: symmetric DTC5C9 and dissymmetric DTC5C9CB. The SR-CDM measurements directly capture the chiral information in the local N domains, providing the ultimate complement to the theoretical predictions of the helical structures: the spontaneous symmetry breaking in N phase is ambidextrous.

Viruses are elegant macromolecular assemblies and constitute a paradigm of the economy of genomic resources; they must use simple general principles to complete their life cycles successfully. Viruses need only one or a few different capsid structural subunits to build an infectious particle, which is possible for two reasons: extensive use of symmetry and built-in conformational flexibility. Although viruses come in many shapes and sizes, two major symmetric assemblies are found: icosahedral and helical.

The homotrimeric SARS-CoV-2 spike protein enables viral infection by undergoing a large conformational transition, which facilitates the fusion of the viral envelope with the host cell membrane. The spike protein is anchored to the SARS-CoV-2 envelope by its transmembrane domain (TMD), composed of three TM helices, each contributed by one of the protomers of spike. Although the TMD is known to be important for viral fusion, whether it is a passive anchor of the spike or actively promotes fusion remains unknown.

We study one-point statistics of helical turbulent pulsations in the background of a three-dimensional large-scale vortex in a rotating fluid. Assuming that the helical flow is created by a statistically axially symmetric random force with broken mirror symmetry, we analytically calculate the velocity-vorticity mean including its magnitude and the anisotropy. For electrically conducting liquid, we examine the α-effect in the system.
