Introduction: Alterations in multiple subregions of the human prefrontal cortex (PFC) have been heavily implicated in psychiatric diseases. Moreover, emerging evidence suggests that circadian rhythms in gene expression are present across the brain, including in the PFC, and that these rhythms are altered in disease. However, investigation into the potential circadian mechanisms underlying these diseases in animal models must contend with the fact that the human PFC is highly evolved and specialized relative to that of rodents.

CIDEC/FSP27 exacerbates obesity-related abdominal aortic aneurysm by promoting perivascular adipose tissue inflammation.

Life Metab

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Metabolic Remodeling and Health, Institute of Metabolism and Integrative Biology, Institutes of Biomedical Sciences, Fudan University, Shanghai 200438, China.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is strongly correlated with obesity, partially due to the abnormal expansion of abdominal perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT). Cell death-inducing DNA fragmentation factor-like effector C (CIDEC), also known as fat-specific protein 27 (FSP27) in rodents, is specifically expressed in adipose tissue where it mediates lipid droplet fusion and adipose tissue expansion. Whether and how CIDEC/FSP27 plays a role in AAA pathology remains elusive.

Advances in human organoids-on-chips in biomedical research.

Life Med

February 2023

Division of Biotechnology, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dalian 116023, China.

Organoids-on-chips is opening up new frontier of research in biomedical field by combining organoids and organs-on-chips technology. The integrative technology offers great opportunities to maximize the potentials of organoids with higher fidelity, thus building advanced organ model systems in a physiologically relevant manner. In this review, we highlight the key features of organoids-on-chips and how this integrative technology could be used to build organoids in higher fidelity under controlled cellular microenvironment.

Manganese therapy for dyslipidemia and plaque reversal in murine models.

Life Metab

December 2023

State Key Laboratory of Membrane Biology, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China.

Precise control of circulating lipid levels is vital in both health and disease. We recently uncovered that bulk lipids, transported by lipoproteins, enter the circulation initially via the coat protein complex II (COPII) in a condensation-dependent manner. Divalent manganese, acting as a signaling messenger, selectively controls COPII condensation to regulate lipid homeostasis .
