Care in nursing as a contested concept? A Bergsonian perspective.

Published: June 2023

The concept of care has occupied a central place in nursing philosophy and scholarship since the modern formation of the profession. Perhaps the defining character of the scholarship has been the recognition not only of the complexity of the concept of care, its elusiveness and ambiguity, but also the lack of consensus or agreement regarding its meaning and value. I will make two interconnected arguments: first, I will argue that disputes around care are not an accidental feature or an unfortunate condition of its applicability. Rather, care is an example of what I will call, following W.B. Gallie (1956), an "essentially contested" concept. Secondly, I will employ insights from the French philosopher Henri Bergson (1859-1941) to explore the concept of care and argue that the essentially contested processual nature of care is the source of its meaning and value.

Background: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education defines "nonphysician obligations" as "duties performed by nursing and allied health professionals, transport services, or clerical staff." How anesthesiology trainees understand the concept of "nonphysician obligations" and are impacted by these obligations is incompletely understood. The objective of the study was to identify how anesthesiology trainees define "nonphysician obligations," which obligations impact trainee education, and what attitudes trainees hold.

An Integrated, Portable, and Automatic Digital Detection System for Hepatitis B Virus Using Hybrid Magnetic System.

Small Methods

January 2025

College of Control Science and Engineering, State Key Laboratory of Industrial Control Technology, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, 310027, China.

The rapid, precise, and automated diagnosis of infectious diseases is crucial for effective disease management and control. Herein, the integrated portable and automatic digital detection system (IPADS), a novel diagnostic platform for nucleic acid detection is introduced. The device employs the hybrid magnetic system (HMS), which uses an electromagnet and a movable permanent magnet to modulate the magnetic field and control bead movement, increasing nucleic acid extraction efficiency to over 80%, while simplifying the traditional labor-intensive process and enabling quick, low-risk sample processing.

In this article we introduce a multirange analytical device that extends the dynamic range of nanoparticle-based immunoassays thanks to a multisensor design. Multirange devices contain low- and high-range sensors in the same analytical platform. The low-range sensor defines the limit of detection and quantifies low concentrated analytes, whereas the high-range sensor defines the upper limit of the dynamic range.
