Robustly detecting mpox and non-mpox using a deep learning framework based on image inpainting.

Sci Rep

January 2025

School of Mathematics and Systems Science, Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University, No. 293, Zhongshan Avenue West, Tianhe District, Guangzhou, 510665, China.

Due to the lack of efficient mpox diagnostic technology, mpox cases continue to increase. Recently, the great potential of deep learning models in detecting mpox and non-mpox has been proven. However, existing methods are susceptible to interference from various noises in real-world settings, require diverse non-mpox images, and fail to detect abnormal input, which makes them unsuitable for practical deployment and application.

Background: The current pandemic of 2022 global mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), caused by infection with monkeypox virus (MPXV), has now reached over 120 countries. This constitutes a critical public health issue requiring effective disease management and surveillance. Rapid and reliable diagnosis is conducive to the control of infection, early intervention, and timely treatment.

Monkeypox, a zoonotic virus in the , has drawn global attention for its impact on public health. In the current Mpox outbreak, a novel clade, Ib, has emerged as a significant and potentially fatal threat. This review examines the dynamics of MPXV transmission, person-to-person spread, and infection mechanisms, highlighting key risk factors.

Purpose Of Review: Several microorganisms, which are not traditionally considered sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are capable of sexual transmission and have the potential to cause global outbreaks. The aim of this review is to describe pathogens which are not traditionally defined as STIs, to grant insight on current and potential outbreaks and call for clinical vigilance among members of key populations.

Recent Findings: Recent findings emphasize that several pathogens, not traditionally classified as STIs, can be sexually transmissible.

Mpox is a zoonotic viral disease caused by the (MPXV). Human cases have been mainly restricted to the African continent until the worldwide multi-country outbreak unfolded in 2022. We reconstructed epidemiological links of 53 MPXV infections using genomic epidemiology in Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil, during 2022 and 2023.
