Published: November 2023

Background: The objective was to analyse the risk of partial school closure by economic level in Barcelona city.

Methods: In this ecological study, the risk of partial school closure for the academic years 2020-21 and 2021-22 was estimated by dividing the total number of days that each child was in quarantine or isolation by the total number of days that each child was at risk to be in quarantine or isolation in the academic year. The association between partial school closure risk and mean income by district was estimated with the Spearman rho.

Results: The lower the mean income, the higher the risk of partial closure (Spearman rho = 0.83; P-value = 0.003) during the academic year 2020-21. Specifically, the children from the district with the lowest income had a six times greater risk of partial school closure compared with those from the highest-income district. This risk did not show a significant socioeconomic gradient in the academic year 2021-22.

Conclusions: The risk of partial school closure presented an inverse socioeconomic gradient in the city of Barcelona according to average income by district in the academic year 2020-21. This distribution was not observed in the academic year 2021-22.

Rationale: We report the efficacy of combination prednisolone and intravenous (IV) rituximab as an immunosuppressive regimen for a young male presenting with extensive venous thromboembolism including a submassive pulmonary embolism secondary to life-threatening nephrotic syndrome from very high risk anti-phospholipase-A2 receptor (PLA2R) positive membranous nephropathy. Initial treatment was with mechanical thrombectomy and anticoagulation. Thereafter, oral prednisolone was initiated to induce remission, during a period of uninterrupted anticoagulation.

Purpose: Surgery remains the cornerstone of localized renal cell carcinoma (RCC) care. Pembrolizumab has recently been recommended as a standard of care for RCC patients who are at high risk of recurrence. Data regarding the efficacy of ICIs either alone or in combination with ICIs or VEGF TKIs for VTT shrinkage are scarce.

Background: Brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)—a key neurotrophin involved in synaptic plasticity, neurogenesis, and neuroprotection—has been shown to mediate sex differences in verbal learning and memory (VLM) ability, but it remains unclear whether this relationship is conditionally dependent upon carriage of the Val66Met polymorphism in the BDNF gene. This study investigates how BDNF carriage influences the mediation of sex differences in VLM scores by plasma BDNF levels in a cohort enriched for AD risk.

Background: A growing body of research has confirmed the presence of epigenetic alterations in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). While the causal relationship between these changes and AD remains uncertain, they offer a novel avenue to explore potential treatments. In this study, we aimed at characterising the methylation signatures of amyloid beta (Aβ) deposition, one of the main hallmarks of AD.
