The quinolone signal (PQS) is an important quorum sensing signal controlling virulence of the human pathogen . PQS also exhibits multiple additional biological functions for . , including the trapping of ferric iron. The PQS-motif has proven as privileged structure with great potential which is why we here explored the synthesis of two different types of crosslinked dimeric PQS-motifs as potential iron chelators. These compounds indeed chelated ferric iron and produced colorful and fluorescent complexes also with other metal ions. Inspired by these results, we revisited the metal ion binding capabilities of the natural product PQS and were able to detect further metal complexes beyond ferric iron and confirm the complex stoichiometry by mass spectrometry.

Ferritin, a highly conserved iron storage protein, is among the earliest proteins that have been purified, named, and characterized due to its unique properties that continue to captivate researchers. Ferritin is composed of 24 subunits that form an almost spherical shell delimiting a cavity where thousands of iron atoms can be stored in a nontoxic ferric form, thereby preventing cytosolic iron from catalyzing oxidative stress. Mitochondrial and extracellular ferritin have also been described and characterized, with the latter being associated with several signaling functions.

Background: Heart failure (HF) guidelines recommend routine testing for iron deficiency (ID) and, for those with ID, intravenous iron if the left ventricular ejection fraction is <50%. Guideline adherence to these recommendations by cardiologists in China is unknown.

Methods And Results: An independent academic web-based survey was designed and distributed via social networks to cardiologists across China.

Objective: Iron supplementation may reduce postoperative anemia, blood transfusions, and infections in patients undergoing surgery. We sought to assess efficacy and safety of prophylactic intravenous iron supplementation in patients without anemia undergoing cardiac surgery.

Methods: In this investigator-initiated industry-sponsored single-center randomized double-blind parallel group trial, we enrolled patients undergoing coronary bypass, aortic or mitral valve or ascending aortic surgery who fulfilled prespecified iron blood test safety criteria.
