π-Activation of alkynyl precursors possessing an endogenous carbon nucleophile is one of the imperative topics in homogeneous gold catalysis as it offers Csp -Csp and Csp -Csp linked carbocycles. However, the exo-dig and endo-dig cyclization modes unlocks the possibility of both small and large rings respectively, thereby losing regioselectivity. Nevertheless, several gold-catalyzed carbocyclizations which permits one isomer by controlling or avoiding the formation of other went largely unnoticed. Hence, this review is an attempt to summarize such approaches reported from early 2000's to till date along with our viewpoint on contributing parameters for regioselectivity. This review covers only unimolecular reactions with classifications primarily based on the type of endogenous nucleophiles such as silyloxyenols, enamides/enamines, benzenoids, heteroaromatics and alkyls/alkenyls. From an application perspective, these reactions are significant in total synthesis and materials science. Therefore, those reactions that finds application in natural product synthesis and π-functional materials are highlighted in appropriate places.

The role of surfactant proteins A and D (SP-A and SP-D) in lung clearance and translocation to secondary organs of inhaled nanoparticles was investigated by exposing SP-A and SP-D knockout (AKO and DKO) and wild type (WT) mice nose-only for 3 hours to an aerosol of 20 nm gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Animals were euthanised at 0-, 1-, 7- and 28-days post-exposure. Analysis by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) of the liver and kidneys showed that extrapulmonary translocation was below the limits of detection.

(1) Background: For the reconstruction of a human vagina, various surgical procedures are available that are often associated with complications due to their failure to mimic the physiology of the human vagina. We recently developed a vascularized, organ-specific matrix from healthy human vaginal wall tissue with suitable biomechanical properties. A superior graft would require further extensive colonization with autologous vaginal cells to reduce complications upon implantation.

Unwanted nonspecific adsorption caused by biomolecules influences the lifetime of biomedical devices and the sensing performance of biosensors. Previously, we have designed B-M-E triblock proteins that rapidly assemble on inorganic surfaces (gold and silica) and render those surfaces antifouling. The B-M-E triblock proteins have a surface-binding domain B, a multimerization domain M and an antifouling domain E.

Background: The deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap is universally considered the gold standard technique for breast reconstruction (BR), though it cannot always be proposed to patients with insufficient donor-site volume. We explore the efficacy of autologous fat transfer (AFT) of the Holm abdomen zone IV in the retropectoral plane during DIEP flap reconstruction (lipo-DIEP flap), to enhance the volume provided by the abdominal donor site in patients with low body mass index (BMI).
Methods: We prospectively enrolled patients with BMI less than 25 kg/m and candidates for lipo-DIEP flap BR (group A) comparing them with a control group (group B) undergoing traditional DIEP flap BR with the same characteristics of the first group (BMI < 25 kg/m).

There is an emerging wide use of nanotechnology in the medical fields. The information regarding distribution and clearance of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in the ocular tissue is insufficient. We investigated the cumulative effect of AuNPs on rat lens structure and their effect on the redox state and aquaporin-0 (AQP0) expression.
