As arsenic widely exists in nature and has been used in the pharmaceutical preparations, the traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) with arsenic include realgar(As_2S_2 or As_4S_4), orpiment(As_2S_3), and white arsenic(As_2O_3). Among the above representative medicine, the TCM compound formulas with realgar are utilized extensively. Just in Chinese Pharmacopoeia(2020 edition), there are 37 Chinese patent medicines including realgar. The traditional element analysis focuses on the detection of the total amount of elements, which neglects the study on the speciation and valence of elements. The activity, toxicity, bioavailability, and metabolic pathways of arsenic in vivo are closely related to the existence of its form, and different forms of arsenic have different effects on organisms. Therefore, the study on the speciation and valence of arsenic is of great importance for arsenic-containing TCMs and their compound formulas. This paper reviewed four aspects of the speciation and valence of arsenic, including property, absorption and metabolism, toxicity, and analytical assay.

Exposure to vanadium (V) occurs through the ingestion of contaminated water, polluted soil, V-containing foods and medications, and the toxicity and absorption during the small intestine phase after oral ingestion play crucial roles in the ultimate health hazards posed by V. In this study, the human colon adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) cells were selected as an intestinal absorption model to investigate the uptake and cytotoxicity of vanadyl sulfate (VOSO) and sodium orthovanadate (NaVO). Our results confirmed the cytotoxic effects of V(IV) and V(V) and revealed a greater toxicity of V(IV) than V(V) towards Caco-2 cells.

In this work, sulfur X-ray emission measurements on a Li-S battery cathode were performed using a laboratory setup as an alternative to more common synchrotron radiation based absorption studies. Photoexcitation by an X-ray tube was used. Valence-to-core Kβ X-ray emission spectra were recorded with a wavelength dispersive crystal spectrometer in von Hamos geometry, providing excellent energy resolution and good detection efficiency.

The transformation of the mineral ferrihydrite in reducing environments, and its impact on the mobility of incorporated trace metals, has been investigated in model laboratory studies, but studies using complex soil or sediment matrices are lacking. Here, we studied the transformation of zinc (Zn)-bearing ferrihydrite labeled with Fe and mixed with natural sediments, incubated in reducing conditions for up to six months. We tracked the evolution of Fe and Zn speciation with Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and with bulk and micro-X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

Fate of arsenic in contaminated coastal soil induced by rising temperature and seawater intrusion.

Key Laboratory of Pollution Ecology and Environmental Engineering, Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, Liaoning, China. Electronic address:

Temperature rising and seawater intrusion are expected to influence the hydrologic regime and redox conditions in coastal soil, and the fate and mechanisms of biogeochemical cycling of Arsenic (As) in the specific environment are poorly understood. This work was carried out in an anaerobic operating chamber by adding sulfate to simulate seawater intrusion under various temperature. Results demonstrated the microbial community diversity was influenced by temperature and the highest Shannon and lowest Simpson index were found at 28 °C.

Background: Remediation of heavy metal-contaminated water using phytoremediation with accumulator aquatic plants is a promising low-cost emerging technology that adapts very well to the surrounding ecosystem. For the system to work efficiently, metal-saturated plants must be replaced, producing a potentially toxic amount of biomass that is usually stored dry to reduce its volume. The speciation of the high metal content in this biomass is crucial to define its final destination.
